POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Lee the Dog, Jan 19, 2010-October 5, 2026.

Lee the dog was born in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin in 2010 to her parents Clarence and Nell. She was Clarence’s 14th and final puppy.

Following a failed start as a sheepdog despite an incredible shepherding heritage, Lee abandoned fancy dog boarding school having only learned to leap 12’ straight up into the air while barking, and clocking 23 mph at a dead run … (or at least that’s as far as we got on my bike in an hour with her running backwards in front of me).

Lee was often Copenhagen the horse’s only brakes, careening across fields and through Kettle Moraine at speeds that made one’s eyes water, branches clawing at exposed skin before someone frantically yelled lie down. She could bark, pant and sprint all at the same time in any direction and generally felt the world was going too slow, and the human wasn’t doing quite enough to entertain her.

In her 16 years and 10 months of existence, she traveled to approximately 47 states, riding along to horse and dog shows for moral support, and keeping folks company up and down from Wisconsin to California, and from Toronto to Florida in trains, cars and planes. She could not care less about crowds, strangers, and anything other than her favorite Bil-jacks treats and the orange bumper toy.

She summited all of the Catskills, Mt Washington, and visited at least 10 National Parks, including Shenandoah, the Everglades and the New River Gorge. She visited Washington, DC and stared at the monuments, swam in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, the Gulf of Mexico and all five Great Lakes. She claimed the sand dunes on the western shore of Lake Michigan, and the top of the cliffs in Devil’s Lake State Park and on the edge of the Mississippi. She was in the car when I almost hit an elk in the UP in the middle of the winter, and she was in the car the time I did a header off my horse while out riding with Manhattan Riding Club.

Rest in Peace Copenhagen (‘Two Rivers Nick’, AQHA 3045174), ‘January 1’ 1991-August 31, 2026.

My horse, Copenhagen, died today at the ripe old age of 36 years and 8 months after a long, happy life at my parents farm, Nippersink Hall in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

When I turned 17, my parents bought their farm and settled in, putting up fences and beginning a collection of livestock.

I was promised a pony because of their relocation and high school graduation and also because mom also wanted a pony. After a summer of looking at a variety of crazy backyard critters, Mom and I met Two Rivers Nick, a gray quarter horse standing 15’ 3, sorta broke and fresh from someone doing a lot of the Parelli method in their backyard. We brought him home.

Copenhagen was, at his peak, an absolutely insane ride and probably more dangerous than I ever let on. But he was my horse, he was gray, he was wicked fast, and he put up with doing every single discipline I could come up with - from barrel racing and pole bending to cattle herding and inept roping.

He did shepherding, show jumping, dressage clinics and finally endurance. If we’d had the capacity to do eventing or fox hunting at that point in my life, he would’ve been perfect for it - brave to the fences, mildly insane and with plenty of scope (when he felt like it).

Copenhagen was never tired, and he was rarely content to just stand there. I learned to drive a truck and trailer simply to haul him to the parking lot at Kettle Moraine, southeastern Wisconsin’s finest horse trailhead, go for a ride with him and the dogs, and then summarily be stuck in that parking lot for hours as he refused to reload into his own personal trailer (apparently for his own reasons).

Copenhagen reared so many times in the stock trailer that eventually it decoupled from the truck at home and at trailheads. And of course, he whinnied incessantly while stuck in the same trailer in the main intersection in town while the truck electrical system failed and we all had to be rescued.

Charismatic, he attracted first Rita, his late horsey girlfriend of mysterious feral Morgan origins, and then George, the donkey from across the fence. He also fo

Happy Third Wedding Anniversary to @mishutkamd, best human, excellent spouse, explorer and soon to be #babydaddy

Knowing you these past six years has been extraordinary and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Did you know we only have two continents to go?

Looking forward to our very precarious next adventure, coming soon to a hospital / medical establishment near you. #23days
