I can tell you exactly when I first heard about @lollapalooza , I was 20 years old. Think about how late that is to learn about something that massive. It was 2011. Unrelatedly the next year I moved to Chicago. I bring this up because you don’t know what you don’t know. When I was 14, living in middle of nowhere NY, I saw my first concert, 40 minutes away in Albany, and averaged one a year thereafter. Upon moving to Chicago, I’m pretty sure I surpassed the number of concerts I had ever seen total within 3-4 years of living here. I feel the need to bring this up, bc as has become typical, predictable, and to the smallest extent, understandable, people seemed to talk more shit than ever this year about Lollapalooza. “It’s too young.” “Too many people” “I don’t recognize any bands” “I wanted to use Grant park that weekend!” The last one I made up. But that’s how it sounds when people complain, often for what just seems like the sake of complaining. Much like many things, you don’t need to be into something to be able to see the value, joy, and fun it brings others. Yes I am significantly older than most of the kids from the suburbs who came to Lolla. Are people really that resistant to building a connection with someone from a different generation? Do you expect them to want to connect with you when you get even older? I recognize less bands, sure. I also discover countless new ones each year, connected with people over at least one commonality, music. People, nowadays, could stand to recognize the things people have in common more frequently as it is much harder to demonize or hate someone when you see their humanity. What’s more human than music? So all this to be said, is Lolla for everyone? Of course not. Is it for more people than people make it out to be? Probably. Is it weird that kids are wearing diapers to be able to stay in the front row? So fucking weird. Should that warrant judgment to the vast majority of the anywhere from 40-60k humans showing up every day to scream their heart out to their favorite artists? No. It is much easier to create your own experience at Lolla than most people realize.
