Another station we had at our 9/26 event was the DIY yogurt bowls with a fun fruit purée mix in made from scratch!! As an organization who values teaching cooking and baking to kids going through all types of difficult circumstances, we strive to adapt our recipes to fit the needs of the kids we teach. In the case of some kids at our @bestbuddiesaz event, swallowing solid or non blended up foods can be challenging or impossible. This station gave the kids the opportunity to learn to make something they could eat and enjoy despite having restrictive diets! Thank you to Carson, Aubrey, and @thename_isemerson for running this station!! 💜💚

Today is Rett Syndrome Awareness Day, and we’re shining a light on one very special girl, Minna Van Arsdale of Arcadia. 💜

We had the privilege of featuring Minna’s story a while back in PVCL, and her light continues to inspire us. 💜

Minna has Rett Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder caused by a random gene mutation. Though she is nonverbal and faces daily challenges like seizures and mobility issues, her joy and resilience never fade. 💜

“Minna is content and always smiles,” says her mom, @ccvanarsdale. “She’s patient and kind… a reminder to pause, to breathe, and to focus on the here and now. The smallest things overpower the big.” 💜

Today, we honor Minna and her incredible family, and we join them in spreading awareness, encouraging inclusiveness, and inspiring compassion for all children and families living with disabilities. 💜

Yesterday we introduced you to Minna, a beautiful first grader with Rett Syndrome, who finds her happiest moments at school through the incredible @bestbuddiesaz program. This initiative pairs students with special needs with typical peers, creating friendships that change lives

In our November THANKFUL issue (pg 34), we spotlight @bestbuddies and how Arizona schools are embracing this life-changing program. Best Buddies is on a mission to end the social, physical, and economic isolation of the 200 million people worldwide with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It is endorsed by icons like Tom Brady and Cindy Crawford

For example, at Cochise Elementary School, students are nominated by teachers to participate as “buddies.” Through activities like scavenger hunts, game days, kickball, and pizza parties, they form connections that transcend the classroom. As Shannon Blair, Cochise’s School Psychologist, shares:

“Activities like ‘get to know you’ projects and group events help our special needs students develop lasting friendships. When they pass each other in the hallways, they’re always exchanging hugs or saying ‘hi.’”

And it’s not just the students with special needs who benefit. Reese Rinzler (second pic), a 5th grader at Cochise, says it best:

“It makes me feel good knowing a teacher suggested I become a buddy. It shows me I’m a good person—someone nice and responsible.”

We’re so proud of the hearts at Valley schools for embracing inclusion and making the world a little brighter, one friendship at a time.

Meet beautiful Minna. The first grader has Rett Syndrome, a neurological disorder caused by a random gene mutation.

“She has two letters flip-flopped in her coding. Minna is nonverbal, walks with assistance, has no useful hand function, experiences abnormal epileptic activity and seizures, breathing abnormalities, feeding and swallowing issues, gastrointestinal issues, and more. She communicates through an eye gaze adaptive communication device and gestures,” says Caroline Van Arsdale, Minna’s mom.

In our November THANKFUL issue, we talked with Caroline Van Arsdale (yes, related to the famed Van Arsdale twins) on having a child with disabilities, which she says is “heart-wrenchingly amazing and debilitating at the same time.”

Caroline sends Minna to Scottsdale’s Cochise Elementary School, given their solid “differently-abled specials” program.

“Minna is content and always smiles. She’s patient and kind. She loves partaking in Cochise’s ‘Best Buddies’ program – gaining attention from peers that she normally doesn’t get,” says Caroline.

In this compelling story of compassion, we dive into the Best Buddies program and how it helps integrate special needs students with typical peers to create new friendships and foster understanding, kindness and inclusiveness.

“Doctors stress the importance of Minna spending time with other kids to further her development,” says Caroline. “She enjoys being with peers even if she can’t always interact. The happiness she feels is so immense and has a lasting effect on every part of her day.“

We’ll be sharing more about @bestbuddiesaz tomorrow, but tonight we dedicate a post to our friend Minna and her family’s organization we hope you’ll explore and support: @mission_minna.

November invites us to slow down and reflect on the blessings we often take for granted, reminding us that gratitude is often found in empathy. In this month of thanks, let our actions speak louder than words—by giving back, we nurture both others and ourselves.

So many emotions it’s hard to know where to start. When Claire passed away one of the things I feared most was loosing our rett family. I figured we’d become a symbol of what we feared most and fade into the distance. It’s been the furthest from that. On #nationalbereavedmothersday I’m not sad. I’m overflowing with the love I got from being with my people at #ascend22 for #rettsyndrome Sure it’s terrible what brings us together but there’s nobody I’d rather be in this with 💜💜💜
