About year ago I began work on what became one of my favorite design projects of the last few years: a logo and brand identity for Mission Youth, the Mission Chattanooga Parish’s community for middle and high school students. For this project, I worked closely with Courtney Allen, the Lay Pastor of Family Ministries, to create a logo that could live within the broader ecosystem of the Mission’s visual identity while carving out a distinct space that students could feel was their own. Courtney was such a joy to work with on this. We shared a lot of the same aesthetic intuitions and her feedback was invaluable.

I reconfigured the Mission’s logo into organic shapes while retaining elements of the essential structure and paired this with a hand drawn font, created by the fantastic artist Madeline Odonoghue from New Zealand, which I customized to complement the logo. I contrasted the organic and childlike shapes with grainy and visceral images from my camera roll. In so doing, I hoped to capture something of what I remember of being in middle and high school: the transitional, intersectional reality of being between childhood and adulthood–experiencing rapid, sometimes uncomfortable and difficult changes but being spurred on towards growth within a safe and loving community.

For every logo sold, there’s a dozen left on the cutting room floor. Though many of these marks don’t yet represent a brand, they do represent thousands of hours of practice—thoughtful exploration, research, and fine-tuning. That process is what I love about my work.

That’s why this @logoarchive.now trend is so inspiring to me. It’s a reminder to be proud of the craft even though a fraction of what I’ve made makes the cut.
