2023 RETROSPECTIVE PT 1: SPORT

2023 was an astounding year for my fitness, going from being what I would consider overweight and out of shape at the beginning of the year to finishing the hardest ultra of my life. I’m so thankful for the incredible summits and valleys I traversed, and all the people who shared miles and slopes with me.

JAN: The year started with a last-minute decision to race the H9 “Fierce Dragon” 100km in Georgia, with a mere 18,000’ of vertical ascent. Despite poor training and frigid conditions, I finished.
FEB: On the penultimate day of our Costa Rica trip, I summited Cerro Chirripó, at 12,536’. It was a long, difficult day in the jungle, but absolutely worth it.
MAY: Desperate for altitude, I flew to California to attempt a Mount Shasta summit with a guided trip. Despite not summiting due to avalanche conditions, I still had an amazing experience.
JUN: I had the great privilege of traveling to Australia to support @harveylewisultrarunner on his bid to win a prestigious Backyard race, but found time to complete a massive trail run on the last day, pictured here in Blue Mountains National Park.
JUL: July was all about the VERT. I racked up over 80,000’ of vert in 6 weeks with copious loops of Sugarloaf and Alley Park. The pinnacle workout was 30 miles w/ 10,000’ of gain, and I started that run with several incredible trail sisters.
AUG: Sur les Traces des Ducs de Savoie (TDS), often presented as the “hardest” UTMB race. Despite incredible pain, sleep deprivation, blizzard-like conditions in the mountains, and 30,000’ of vertical ascent, I finished the 100 mile race in 38 hours and 30 minutes.
OCT: @arcentoni and I had been planning Cactus to Clouds to Cactus for over a year, and we finally did. From the floor of Palm Springs to the summit of San Jacinto (10,834’) and back down in one shot.
NOV: Training took a backseat in November as I wrestled with COVID and a sprained ankle. But hosting the annual @tinarraceseries Alley Trail Marathon was a bright spot.
DEC: Feeling back up to speed, I logged some miles with my new vert friend Amanda at Clear Creek Metro Park. The hills there seemed a bit smaller this time.
