Hana Meihan Davis (M.Arch’26) @hanstere Come Hell or High Water 4.228 Urbanism Proseminar If protest is the disturbance of the formal order of the city, then how does it transform a space of flows into a space of friction and disruption? How might protesters be empowered to not only dream—but actualize—a new future from the waves of this rupture? From summer to winter 2019, large-scale demonstrations forever transformed the political and urban landscape of Hong Kong. My project studies how the ‘regular’ was reconfigured through micro urban protest interventions. I center urbanism that is grassroots to push against the top-down macro systems of oppression at the hands of the government and law enforcement. From the creation of ‘brick-henges’ to the mobilisation of Hong Kong’s winding and narrow city streets, the urban tactics employed by protesters were far reaching. The interventions were largely ephemeral, specific to the space-time of 2019, but traces remain—ghosts of the revolution haunting Hong Kong’s streetscape. To “be water” is the ideology that grounded the movement; this is the methodology my research and drawings follow: “To be formless and shapeless, like water / To- Scatter like Mist / Gather like Dew / Be Strong Like Ice / But- to ultimately be dam(n)ed like a river.”
