Seeing pics of friends building their art shanties this year and feeling both jealous and relieved that I'm not making art on a frozen lake right now. But this remains one of my favorite pics ever. Mail delivery vehicle build for The Art Shanties in 2012 by me and @mitchelldosestudio

Another sneak peak at the in-progess prototype of our new solar power education system. We just hung the doors on the enclosure and are super excited at how it's coming together. We're trying to open up the black box to make solar education more accessible for all types of learners.

Over the last couple of years, in partnership with the NYC Department of Education's Office of Sustainability, we've been piloting small #offgrid #pv #solarpower systems in schoolyards around New York City. These systems are both teaching aids for #STEM and #solar curriculum, as well as functional furniture allowing the community to power devices. They've been used with students as young as pre-k, to middle school sciences classes that learn about solar energy and analyzing solar data, all the way up to 12th grade vocational classes where students learn real solar installation skills. The system includes USB ports, an AC outlet, charge controller display, and data visualization through a smart phone app. The hardware is paired with professional development workshops for teachers so they can integrate them into their curriculum. We'll be launching the next iteration of this design in the fall and are looking to expand this work to more school systems around the country. Are you interested in having a schoolyard solar system at your school? Get in touch with us to talk about buying options!

This is the first #GivingTuesday in a long time that I have *not* been hustling for a nonprofit. But I couldn't let the day slip by without giving a shout-out to my friends at @beamcenter and the incredible work they do with youth. Beam Center supports youth as artists, makers and agents of change in their own lives, empowering them to help make the world a better place. Beam, like so many nonprofits, could not do the amazing work they do without your support. Please find a way to give a little love to the nonprofits that are meaningful to you today.

BEACON , profiled here, was designed by Shervone Neckles and built by Beam staff and Beam Project Fellows. It is a homage to Black inventor Lewis Latimer who created the first electric light. The work has a beautiful glow; it literally lights up when viewers are in the vicinity. The work is a symbol of hope and light that we desperately need! It can be seen in Downtown Brooklyn through the spring.

Learn more about the spectacular art works Beam has created with youth in NYC (all boroughs + Governors Island) and New Hampshire at beamcenter.org or follow them on IG: @beamcenter . You can give to their Giving Tuesday campaigns on IG, FB or on their website: beamcenter.org/donate.
