READ: The day after the towers fell, New York’s junior senator went to Ground Zero—and carried the city’s fight back to Washington.

On September 11, 2001, @hillaryclinton was a freshman United States senator representing New York.

The following morning, she returned from Washington with fellow New York Sen. Chuck Schumer. From the air, Clinton saw the smoke, burning wreckage and devastation where the World Trade Center had stood.

Then she entered Ground Zero.

What Clinton witnessed helped shape her work in the days, months and years that followed. She fought for federal assistance to rebuild New York, called attention to the lasting health effects of the toxic air and helped secure funding to screen, monitor and treat first responders, recovery workers and others exposed at the site.

For Clinton, September 11 also revealed dangerous weaknesses in America’s national security—and what she has described as a failure to imagine the threats the country faced.

Twenty-five years later, the @yale graduate returned to New York for the VOICES 25th Anniversary Symposium and asked whether the nation had truly absorbed the lessons of that day.

“What lessons did we learn, and did we apply the lessons we learned?” Clinton asked. “What were lessons we should have learned that we didn’t learn?”

Read “The Senator,” part of I NEVER FORGOT, an original series from The Connecticut Native commemorating the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001.

As we close the VOICES 25th Anniversary NYC Symposium, we reflect with gratitude on three meaningful days of conversation, remembrance, resilience, and connection.

On our final day, speakers and panelists explored important themes including preserving memory, responding in the aftermath of 9/11, pursuing justice 25 years later, workers’ compensation and health, stories of resilience, advocacy and reform, and the ongoing work of preserving the legacy of the 9/11 community. The day also featured a special conversation with Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton and a look at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s special exhibit.
We are deeply grateful to all of our speakers and panelists for sharing their knowledge, experiences, and perspectives throughout these important conversations.

A special thank you to our sponsors and partners for supporting this milestone and helping make the symposium possible.

And to everyone who joined us, in person in New York City or online through our livestream, thank you for being part of this important moment. Your presence and engagement help us continue the work of remembering, learning, and building resilience for the future.

Thank you @magic_sites for capturing the meaningful conversations, powerful moments, and connections that made our 25th Anniversary NYC Symposium so special.

Days before the 25th anniversary of 9/11, New York City released about 170,000 pages of documents related to post-Sept. 11, 2001, air quality and health risks, some of which suggest city officials knew of the potential environmental dangers and legal exposure in the early aftermath of the terror attacks. NBC News’ @mitchellreports speaks with first responder John Feal and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton about the impact. Watch the full video in the NBC News app or on NBCNews.com.

🎥 I can’t believe I am sitting down with the legendary Andrea Mitchell for an interview! 🎙️✨

Having a true icon spotlight our mission on a national stage was a massive honor, and also the ultimate full-circle moment for me. Our mission is to bring women’s sport to Philly and beyond.

When I was 21 years old, I started my career at the WTA at the French Open. My English wasn’t good enough back then, and I was told to go learn and come back. I never went back to work for them… instead, many years later, I brought a whole WTA tournament back to Philly! 🥹🎾

Proving to myself, and to that 20-year-old girl, that everything happens for a reason. Bringing world-class pro tennis back to Philly after 22 years took every ounce of heart and hustle we had, but seeing Philly show up and sell out made every single second worth it.

I am so beyond proud of my Sisters: Ashley, Starla, Wanda, and Kyasha. What a family we are. Look at what we built!
Pure girl power, Sisters. 💪💜

And guess what? You can do the same. Never let a setback stop you from building your own table.

You can visit www.SistersSportsGroup.com to show your support… all merch is on sale now! 🛒✨🎾💛

“Women now have so many great opportunities, and to bring it to Philly with the best fans…” @mitchellreports 🥹

Before Title IX was enacted, women could not fathom the opportunities that we have today. Thats our why. Women deserve this. Women athletes deserve this. Invest in women.

Thank you to @mitchellreports for coming to witness the greatness that is women’s sports in Philly at the @ennoblecarephillyopen 💚
