Mitchell Burleson is a southern artist with an interdisciplinary approach to weaving. His practice seeks to abstract the process of weaving in order to understand his connection to craft, family and culture. After receiving his BS in fashion and textile design from NC State University, Burleson continued his education at Haywood Community College, receiving an AAS in professional craft under Amy Putansu. Burleson is based in Lexington, KY pursuing his MFA in studio art at the University of Kentucky. Burleson was the 2025 winner of the Artfields Competition and Festival and has shown at the Mint Museum, The Folk Art Center, Artspace, and has upcoming exhibitions at the Living Arts and Science Center and Bolivar Gallery in Lexington.

Okay I’m late to the party but I’ve gotta share my immense gratitude to these phenomenal students and faculty. Thank you all for bringing your creativity and willingness to delve completely into new territory with me. I am honored to know each of you and am truly blessed to have been changed from this experience. I am blown away by our students’ ingenuity and the caliber of work they were able to create in just 9 short days!

Words cannot fully express how much my time working @centrum.rzezby.polskiej with my esteemed colleagues from @aspkrakow and @uksavs has meant to me, and I look forward to future collaboration!

Among many feats from this experience, I can’t believe I got to make a collaborative sculpture with my MFA thesis professor @goodwinrae and the incredible, indescribable, master of of the wheel, @hunter__stamps_sculpture 😭😭😭

INSTITUTE 193 SELLS OUT is now open! Big thanks to Paul Masterson for our beautiful new bookshelves (phase one of our shop buildout), @shopgonzovintage for help with furnishing the holiday shop, Dianna Settles for even more handmade decorations than last year, and to all our participating artists and craftspeople, whose ranks will continue to swell in the coming days.

The shop will be open Weds-Sat, 11am-6pm through December 20. Shop local and support Southern artists this holiday season!

I got to help plan a summit for Southern curators!✨ Took a road trip with @kcloartsy for the second iteration of the Southern Curators Summit produced by @artfieldssc and @southartsorg in Lake City, SC.

For the first one in 2023, I gained new colleagues in various art spaces across the southeast and these connections turned into paid opportunities. Being on the Planning Committee for this biennial summit meant that I could bring my Atlanta art friends to share their genius. Thankful to @tksmith106 and @mirandakyle13 for saying yes!

The summit creates an opportunity for curators feel supported in their work in amplifying southern artists, engage in high-level discussions about the current state of the arts, and seeks to strengthen the South’s position as a cultural hub that rivals other regions in the country.

Thank you to the team at @artfieldssc and the quaint city of Lake City for welcoming 50 curators and art workers to convene in the name of growth!
