Today's Oscar-qualified short is ‘Once in a Body,’ María Cristina Pérez González’s hand-painted film about a woman carrying a strange being inside her as she seeks to reconcile with her sister over their shared past. In our interview, the Colombian filmmaker discusses working with painters new to animation, preserving the imperfections of brushstrokes, and using transforming images to explore memory, vulnerability, and women’s relationships with their bodies. Full feature linked in bio.

Color played such an important role in how we told the story of Saba. Since the entire film is one continuous shot, we couldn’t rely on cuts to show the passage of time or shifts in emotion. Instead, we used color to help guide the audience through the story and reflect what our characters are feeling. We also talk about why we decided to go with hand-drawn animation, which has been my passion since I was six years old. Once I saw the designs for the film, I knew we had to at least try. I’m so happy we went with traditional hand-drawn animation because I feel it brings such a sense of intimacy to the story. In this second part of our Making of Saba series, we hear from our amazing production designer Avner Geller, our incredibly talented color and look designer Mike McCain, and the legendary animator James Baxter, who share some of their thoughts and experiences from working on Saba. We’ll be sharing more parts soon. Hope you enjoy it! #Saba #MakingOfSaba #HandDrawnAnimation #2DAnimation #BehindTheScenes #Animation #AnimatedShortFilm #FYC
