Empowering young people to be the champions of change through Jimmy Mizen’s legacy of forgiveness, peace, and hope.

The reason we play. The reason we remember. The reason we choose forgiveness, peace and hope 🤍🕊️

Following the devastating loss of their son, Jimmy, who was murdered aged just 16, Margaret and Barry have dedicated their lives to spreading a message of forgiveness, peace and hope. Rather than allowing tragedy to define them, they have chosen to turn unimaginable heartbreak into a legacy that inspires others to choose kindness, compassion and understanding.

Through their faith, Margaret and Barry continue to share a message of forgiveness, peace and hope — reminding us of the power of love in the face of unimaginable suffering, and of the light that can shine even in our darkest moments.

Their visit means so much to our school community, particularly as we prepare to play for the Mizen Cup in Jimmy’s memory — a lasting reminder of a young life taken too soon, and of the message his family continue to share so courageously.

Margaret and Barry, thank you for trusting us with Jimmy’s story, for the love you continue to share, and for reminding us of what truly matters. Your strength is extraordinary, and your message is one we will carry with us long after you leave.

For Jimmy. For forgiveness. For peace. For hope. Always. 🕊️🤍

Today, we had the absolute privilege of welcoming Margaret and Barry Mizen back to St Bede’s for a truly moving and thought provoking day. ❤️

We began with a Celebration of the Word in our chapel, led beautifully by our Chaplaincy Team, before our Year 11 students heard the story of Jimmy and the devastating impact of his loss.

It was an incredibly emotional and powerful session, giving our students the opportunity to reflect on the value of life, the importance of forgiveness and the lasting impact our actions can have on others.

What followed was a series of deeply thoughtful and heartfelt questions from our students, leading to some really meaningful conversations.

We are so grateful to Margaret and Barry for sharing Jimmy’s story with such honesty, courage and compassion. Their work through the Mizen Foundation is a powerful reminder of the importance of choosing love over hate and making a positive difference in the world.

Thank you, Margaret and Barry, for such an unforgettable day and for leaving our young people with so much to think about.

Tomorrow, we continue to honour Jimmy’s memory as we host the Jimmy Mizen Cup — bringing our students together through sport, respect and the powerful message that love will always be stronger than hate. ⚽

Over the coming days, we’ll be introducing you to the players, hearing their thoughts ahead of kick-off and sharing more about the story and meaning behind the Jimmy Mizen Cup.

Held in memory of Jimmy Mizen, the cup represents respect, community, friendship and standing up for what’s right — values that make this fixture about so much more than football.

"Through the deepest tragedy imaginable, the loss of their son Jimmy, they have become extraordinary witnesses to the power of faith and hope, and importantly of Christian forgiveness… Rather than becoming angry or bitter or lashing out, they opened their arms in love and have become ambassadors to Christ and His Gospel" - Archbishop John Wilson

Archbishop John presented the Archbishop's Medal to Barry and Margaret Mizen for their work for peace and reconciliation. The Medal was presented at the Schools Commencement Mass at St George's Cathedral, where hundreds of pupils gave them a standing ovation.

Please join us in giving thanks to God for Barry and Margaret, and for the work of the Mizen Foundation in bringing forgiveness, peace and hope to so many young people.

✨ New School Year Blessing ✨
Today, our newly appointed Year 6 leaders joined pupils from schools across the Archdiocese for the Beginning of Year Mass. 🙏
It was a beautiful celebration that brought us together in prayer and reflection. Archbishop John’s inspiring message touched our hearts and reminded us of the importance of leading with faith, kindness and service.
We were especially delighted to see Margaret and Barry Mizen receive the Archbishop’s Medal in recognition of their outstanding contribution. The Mizen Foundation, which sponsors our annual Sparkle Award, continues to inspire our school community through its message of hope, forgiveness and positive choices.
Congratulations to our Year 6 leaders as they begin their leadership journey this year. We know they will be wonderful role models for our school family. ⭐

A huge congratulations to our very own Christable who was recently awarded the Mizen foundation Sparkle Award after her nomination by Ms Azams. She not only received this beautiful a certificate and award but a letter detailing;

Congratulations on winning the Sparkle Award in memory of our son, Jimmy.

The Sparkle is given to someone who represents qualities that defined Jimmy: someone who is kind, caring, and works hard to make a positive impact on those around them.

“Christable is an all-round fantastic contributor in lessons and has also enriched the school with her contributions to extracurricular events and enrichment activities for other students, including parent evenings and prom. Academically she is a hard worker, but more importantly has a heart of compassion towards other students. She is helpful, hardworking, independent and thinks of others with a maturity that is beyond her years. She is a star pupil in all respects, and her attitude is so joyful and compassionate. Her kindness truly stands out.”

You are an inspirational young person, Christable. Your compassion, joy and dedication to helping others reflect the values we hold dear. Through your kindness and positive attitude, you make a real difference to your school community and to everyone fortunate enough to
know you. We are so proud to present this award to you. We wish you every success for the future and remember, never lose your Sparkle ✨
