I was on PRX’s The World talking about the continuous Israeli raids that have left tens of thousands of Palestinians displaced, as well as settler violence being carried out with impunity. 🔗 in bio

In Japan, people come to listening lounges to hear vinyl records on high-quality equipment, with no distractions.

Some venues use speakers that cost six figures, and some DJs don’t even take requests, only picking tunes from their own playlists.

Jazz kissa, or jazz cafés, started in the 1950s after the Korean War, when American soldiers passed through Japan and brought jazz records with them. But, at the time, vinyl records were hard for people to afford.

Now, the tradition is returning to its roots, with more of them opening up in the US and around the world.

For DJ Nobuo “Miya” Miyamae, Western-style nightlife is so lively, it’s hard to find somewhere chill and lowkey, to just enjoy a well-crafted cocktail and good music. He’s an exception to the trend — he says it’s ok if people want to have a conversation during his set. He also takes requests.

DJ and nightclub owner Shuya Okino said listening lounges are hot right now because younger people are more, in his words, “square.” He’s observed that they don’t want to stay out late partying, unlike back in the day.

“They are young,” he said. “But they are more mature [in their] thinking.”

BREAKING: South Korea’s impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol has been arrested

After an unprecedented declaration of emergency martial law, President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached last month. He was meant to appear in front of South Korea’s Constitutional Court yesterday, but failed to show up. Protesters also attempted to block the investigators who tried to take Yoon into custody.

The World’s Matthew Bell spoke to supporters of Yoon at a protest in Seoul before the arrest. They’d been gathering for days outside the presidential residence, where Yoon had been staying since his Dec. 3 martial law declaration to avoid arrest.

“I am disgusted. Most of our lawmakers are corrupted,” protester Han Gon Jo said.

Another Yoon supporter, Chong Jin Do, echoed this sentiment: “They almost are similar to Communist Party! … Yes, [Yoon] is the power and he’s the right philosophy of liberal democracy. So I support him.”

“To prevent any unfortunate incidents or bloodshed I have decided to comply with the summons by the Corruption Investigation Office, despite their investigation being illegal,” Yoon announced in an address to the nation.

A convoy carried Yoon to the Corruption Investigation Office, then to a detention center. The charge he’s facing is insurrection, which carries a possible death sentence.

There's been a fight in Israel for decades over who should serve in the army. A concession was made at Israel’s founding to exempt the ultra-Orthodox, with the idea that their Torah study was as important to the Jewish people as the army. But that's worn thin.

Despite the danger from rocket fire, 90-year-old Isaiah Foyer is staying put in his home in Ashkelon, Israel.

Foyer’s home, located less than 10 miles from the Gaza border, was seriously damaged by a rocket on Oct. 7.

He heard the warning siren and was in his safe room when the rocket hit causing a powerful explosion. What’s left of the rocket is in his driveway.

When asked how scared he was at the time, he shrugged off the question.
“I lived through World War II, in the [Warsaw] ghetto,” he said.

Foyer said he was a 7-year-old orphan in Nazi-occupied Poland when he was taken prisoner and tortured by the Germans. He recalled how he escaped into the forest and joined the resistance fighters there. After the war, he resettled in Israel, in 1948.

Now, Foyer said it’s Hamas that’s trying to kill him.
Foyer said he’s not sure how long this war will last, but he’s not going to leave his home.

After Hamas militants attacked southern Israel on Oct. 7, many communities completely emptied out as tens of thousands of people moved to other parts of Israel to get further away from rocket fire.

Noam Tsuriely grew up in Jerusalem listening to his dad play jazz on the piano. That music turned out to be a big influence on Noam, who’s soon releasing his debut hip-hop album called, “Lyrics, Melody & Vision.”

For one of his tracks, Tsuriely delivers his lines seamlessly in both Hebrew and Arabic. Another track is an ode to climate activist Greta Thunberg.

But most of his music is not political at all.

He sings and raps a lot about love, relationships, and heartbreak. Because, he says, that’s just who he is.
