Football has always been about more than football.

It is loyalty, identity, masculinity, money and belonging, all packed into four quarters. But what happens when a football club decides that losing is the best way to win? What happens when winning becomes more important than the people playing the game?

The Ballad of Dan O’Malley: A Football Tragedy makes its world premiere in Melbourne this August.

Inspired by the Melbourne Football Club’s controversial 2009 ‘tanking’ saga, this new Australian play explores what happens when loyalty to the game collides with the business behind it.

📍 Explosives Factory, Theatre Works, St Kilda
📅 12–22 August

A night at the theatre for The Ballad of Dan O’Malley 🏈

A new play by Paul Mitchell, directed by Therèsa Borg, bringing a very Australian football story to the stage.

The lighting by Jason Bovaird is seriously impressive, and the set and costume design by Dylan Lumsden really helps bring the world of the play to life.

Always love seeing new Australian theatre getting a run.

Playing now at Theatreworks Explosives Factory

This musical production at @fortyfivedownstairs is truly mesmerising!

The Opening of “Ordinary Days” at Forty-Five Down Stairs is conveniently nestled right next to Cumulus Inc.

From the moment I stepped inside, I was enveloped by a warm, inviting atmosphere that echoed the charm of a New York warehouse, the perfect backdrop for a story set in the vibrant heart of New York City.

The production stars the incredibly talented Melanie Bird, whom many of us adore from her stellar performance in ‘Sister Act.’ As Deb, a grad student grappling with the pressures of academia and her quest for purpose, Bird is nothing short of mesmerising. Her portrayal of Deb is a masterclass in vulnerability and humour, bringing to life a character who is both relatable and compelling. The lyrics she delivers are beautifully crafted, and her dynamic vocal range, combined with her sharp wit, stood out as a highlight of the evening.

Possibly one of the most enjoyable productions of the year! I love NYC and this had me laughing & hooked from the get go!

Set in New York in the 1990’s we follow the journey of 4 seemingly independent strangers discovering just how similar and connected they are in searching for purpose and meaning in life and in the process reminding us all of the beauty that is in the every day, if we just choose to see it.

It’s 80 minutes, without interval, that flys by, holding your attention and heart every moment.

The casting is brilliant with some solid nuanced performances from a cohesive cast of 4.

It was such a joy to see Bobby Fox (as Jason) really flex his skills in Ordinary Days and offer us that signature magic in his voice partnered with Sarah Morrison (as Claire) who captures the nuance of conflicting emotion in her role perfectly.

In the role of Deb, Melanie Bird shone with her character growth, comedic timing and genius micro expressions perfectly bouncing off the eternally optimistic Warren, played by Joel Granger whose sparkle is infectious.

The cast are in this joyous symbiotic relationship with the grand piano and musical direction of Vicky Jacobs who takes an already perfectly crafted score to even more dizzying heights..

Directed by Tyran Parke whose vision, energy, interpretation, and passion are characteristically stamped on this production making it an absolute must see.

Forty Five Downstairs is a unique performance space that was creatively and perfectly leveraged to elevate Ordinary Days with a more intimate and immersive experience.

The masterful use of space, really cleaver lighting design from Gavin Swift and beautifully clean sound reinforcement from Jack Scandrett - all working together to make this anything but an ordinary.

This is genuinely quite a special show and an experience I thoroughly enjoyed.

Ordinary Days is on till the end of August at Forty Five Downstairs in Melbourne.

Pride and Prejudice opening night was wonderful ✨ Nadine Garner’s incredible transformation as the storyteller brought Jane Austen’s world to life in a way that felt intimate and deeply personal. Her ability to embody the essence of each character, from their humor to their heartbreak, was captivating. Paired with Madeleine Easton’s beautiful violin and Dan Le’s piano, the combination of music and narrative felt like stepping back into moments in history. Don’t miss this special season at Arts Centre Melbourne! 🎭🎶
