Happy Birthday to George Gershwin, born on this day in 1898! I’ve been dusting off Rhapsody in Blue in preparation for @mkchorale’s concert on 21 February in Milton Keynes. I first learnt it as a teenager; having begun the long process of reworking it, I discover I didn’t really learn it properly in the first place... Does that sound familiar to anyone else? Here’s a snippet of the early stages of my slightly wiser, more accurate, version. Much more to do… Tickets from mkchorale.org! 💙

Happy Birthday to Gerald Finzi, born on this day in 1901. Last year I got to perform one of my favourites, his Eclogue, with @alina_orchestra as part of @mkchorale’s Summer Concert. It was written originally as the middle movement of an ultimately unfinished piano concerto. Reposting a snippet from that concert, conducted by @mark.conductor, and with permission from the orchestra. Enjoy!

A few lovely rehearsal photos from yesterday’s superb @mkchorale Sea Pictures concert, thanks to @susieqz2. Many giggles were had. Beyond thrilled that Philip Fowke, whom I studied piano with, popped into the rehearsal as an extra pair of ears. Concert photos coming soon… swipe to the end for a glimpse.

Concert prep day… Really looking forward to playing one of my favourite piano works ever written on Sunday for @mkchorale’s Sea Pictures concert - John Ireland’s The Island Spell.

It was inspired by an early Sunday morning walk along a Jersey beach in 1913. Whilst lost in his thoughts, the church bell began ringing in the distance before a service. Ireland’s piano writing is just stunning… and very few know of him. Here’s a snippet.
