The Pearl was the place to be on First Thursday! It was so much fun to bounce around to all of the art openings, and especially all of the PTXM: Layers of Resilience openings around downtown! But now that First Thursday has come and gone, there is still plenty of time to get out there and see some of the phenomenal textile works on display.

How could you not be blown away by the craft of the pieces included in “Contemporary Textiles” on display at Elizabeth Leach Gallery? @elizabethleachgallery Here’s some candid shots from the opening night. Contemporary Textiles is a group exhibition featuring work by MK Guth @mkguth , Elizabeth Hohimer @elizabeth.hohimer Ellen Lesperance @ellenlesperance , Mary Ann Peters @mapseattle , Vo Vo @anoutrecordings and Anna Von Mertens @annavonmertens

Through weaving, knotting, knitting, stitching, drawing, and participatory performance, these artists transform personal memories, cultural histories, labor, protest, community, and scientific inquiry into material form.

Elizabeth Leach Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:30 AM - 5:30 PM, so you should be able to find a time to swing by and take in these breathtaking pieces of textile art in person.

Opening on October 1st with a reception from 5:30–7:30 p.m! Elizabeth Leach Gallery @elizabethleachgallery presents Contemporary Textiles, a group exhibition featuring work by MK Guth, Elizabeth Hohimer, Ellen Lesperance, Mary Ann Peters, Vo Vo, and Anna Von Mertens. Coinciding with Portland TextileX Month, the exhibition brings together six artists from four states whose distinct practices respond to this year’s theme, Layers of Resilience.

Through weaving, knotting, knitting, stitching, drawing, and participatory performance, these artists transform personal memories, cultural histories, labor, protest, community, and scientific inquiry into material form.

Anna Von Mertens @annavonmertens works at the intersection of art and science, hand stitching star patterns onto hand dyed cotton to connect astronomical events with moments in human history.

MK Guth @mkguth incorporates textiles into participatory installations and performances, inviting audiences to braid and sew fabric into collaborative sculptures and tapestries that explore interaction and interconnection.

Elizabeth Hohimer @elizabeth.hohimer uses a sixteen harness European floor loom and a distinctive double cloth technique to translate the visual languages of Minimalism, Abstract Expressionism, and Color Field painting into woven works rooted in the landscape and history of the Texas Hill Country.

Ellen Lesperance @ellenlesperance draws from archives of historic protest movements, transforming the knit garments worn by women activists into meticulous works on paper that honor movements for environmental protection, civil rights, and nuclear disarmament.

Mary Ann Peters @mapseattle challenges historic misrepresentations of Arab immigrants while honoring the craftsmanship and labor of women silk workers in Lebanon, drawing upon her perspective as a second generation Lebanese American artist.

Vo Vo @anoutrecordings uses textiles to examine systems of production and oppression while offering gestures of care and possibilities for healing. Their large scale tapestries weave together imagery of violence, nature, discovery, and social change.

We're getting closer and closer to the opening of our upcoming exhibition, "Eons: Unraveling Time"! As a sneak peek, check out this detailed close-up of installation artist MK Guth's "Cosmos" (2024). Resembling a galaxy from afar, this woven tapestry becomes a textured landscape when seen up close. Come and experience this incredible piece and many more at the opening reception for "Eons: Unraveling Time" on Thursday, October 15th from 5-7pm, at the Schneider Museum of Art.

MK Guth has long explored the sociopolitical power of hair, particularly the process of braiding, in her practice.

From participatory installations that examine the myth of Rapunzel in contemporary culture to performances in which audience members weave wishes written on fabric scraps into the artist’s own braid, the artist considers hair as a site of human interaction and community.

For Guth, braiding also makes labor visible and tangible. The braiding that structures many of her works asks audiences to encounter the physical act of making. As she explains, these processes “amplify human presence,” making the labor behind a work an essential part of how it is experienced.

A lenticular is an image split into interlaced slices and sealed under a ridged plastic lens so what is seen depends entirely on where
one stands.

Patented in the early 1900s and popularized through mid-century novelty postcards and cereal-box art, the technology long existing at the edge of kitsch and illusion.

In the hands of M.K. Guth, a multidisciplinary artist working in video, sculpture, and performative social exchange, the viewer is invited into the making of the work.

As one sways side to side, the game tug of war, enacted in the image, is then reenacted in our gaze. You didn’t just look at Guth’s piece, you played it.

‘Let’s Play’ opens at Elizabeth Leach Gallery in conjunction with Portland Arts Week: Art x Sports.

Reflecting on the gallery’s 45 years of exhibiting regional, national, and international art, Let’s Play brings together works that capture the pathos, angst, and exhilaration embedded in athletic competition and spectatorship. The exhibition spans a broad range of approaches: from the humor and absurdity latent in sports culture to its darker psychological terrain, from the dynamism of athletic movement to the way sports objects carry collective memory and identity. Several artists work directly with found materials, repurposing jerseys and clothing left behind by fans to interrogate how athletics shape who we are and how we see ourselves.

Portland Arts Week launches its inaugural summit this July, activating Portland’s Cultural Corridor with exhibitions, dialogues, performances, and community events. Bringing together local luminaries, arts organizations, galleries, and national thought leaders, the week examines how athletics and culture shape identity, community, and innovation. Programming includes a symposium at the Portland Art Museum, a citywide gallery walk, an event at PICA, and additional downtown performances throughout the week.

May was a beautiful combination of family and friends. Ella is in Tucson this summer studying for the DAT (dental school prerequisite), but gratefully was able to make a quick trip home. ❤️💋

I met our newest Yoder family member, Oscar, and enjoyed a beautiful meal in Jasmine’s new home.

The month was also filled with celebration, including two galas supporting #pica and #dressforsuccess

Huge Congrats to our former neighbors but continued friends Cristin Tierney Gallery. Now located at 49 Walker Street in the heart of Tribeca, the gallery is celebrating its 15th year in business and has named the current exhibit Fifteen in honor of that. I urge you to check them out.

TBT to MK Guth’s “Choreography for Reading Aloud” performances during our opening celebrations for “Fifteen” last week.

Guth arranged for performers—disguised as gallery-goers—to randomly begin reading aloud texts about Tribeca and our artists, one cued after the other, creating a cacophony of sound where stories and facts collide with experience. The work engaged and drew attention to what happens when multiple platforms of knowledge overlap, intersect, and obscure each other.
