Across the African continent, women have always carried more than their share of the story.

They are the matriarchs who preserved our histories, the traders who built thriving local economies, the leaders who sustained communities, the organizers who stood at the frontlines of resistance, and the creatives shaping how Africa tells its story today.

From generation to generation, African women have nurtured possibility, held communities together, and reimagined what the future of the continent can be.

Today, we celebrate their courage, their labour, their brilliance, and the legacy they continue to build.

One minute, you’re gasping for air in fear of the unknown. Life after university and you’re left wondering what the world has in store for you. It doesn’t help that you’re in Nigeria. What’s the guarantee of getting a good paying job? Don’t get me started on what the benchmark for being “qualified” can look like to the an average employer. These were my fears, as would anyone in my position at the time.

If you’d told me I’d be where I am today, 7 years ago, I probably wouldn’t have believed you. I’d have wished and prayed for it my mind but to your face, I would’ve chuckled. Here I am — barely having time for myself as I’ve poured so much into my job. The good thing is that I get to be better every day. But as the saying goes, “too much of a thing is unhealthy.”

I’ve poured so much into another person’s vision and I’m looking to do so for myself this year. One of it is to write — creatively, journalistically — and find ways to document as I’m doing so now.

I wrote a piece on my blog, detailing what it’s been like after a year in the job scene. I was awarded Rookie of the Year at the company’s EOY and even though I deserved it, I still had a shock on my face when I heard it. It was real. It was confirmation and real proof of my dedication. I said so much, so you should read.
