Being designated food photographer “Fongy you do it” or paparazzi (sorry Frenchie) means I don’t actually have a lot of photos of myself here. Which is fine.

If I bring you here it generally means (1) I like you! and (2) I am comfortable enough with you that I don’t experience anxiety about how you’d react to things like how dark it is, how rich the food can be and how many drinks I can consume. (3) you’re my people and I want you to be well fed and have a great afternoon/night, and sleep-in.

I’ve been here with a lot of people over the years (edit: for occasions happy and sad, and shoutout to those who refused to let me be alone on the nights I wanted to) and I don’t always take photos of them. I’d have pics of you all here if I could.

@kashima.antlers is one of the legendary Japanese soccer league team and its youth team is in Sydney now.
What a great timing it is!!
They are participating in some friendly matches and trainings here in Sydney.
The team has amazing history and achievement in past and still in 2025, one of the strongest team in J league now.

@yuzo.tashiro was the striker at Antlers previously and represents national team as well, Antlers had @zico back in 90’s as a player and more mega famous soccer players.

Now we are serving to such a deeply meaningful Japanese football team.
Thanks for this opportunities and all the best for the future for youth players and @kashima.antlers @matefc_australia

Onigiri seems to be all the rage these days. Here's how to make the beloved Japanese rice snack - with a recipe from Sydney's bustling onigiri spot, Parami.

“So often associated with Japanese cooking, there’s no pursuit of perfection or mind-bending technique accompanying traditional onsen cooking. Rather, it is a methodology hinging on the unequivocal conviction that your produce is of pristine quality. Encouraging tastes must be there from the start. There’s no safety net knob of butter whisked in at the end, redeeming sauce swirl, or appealing licks of flames to rescue any wayward or devoid flavours. Purity is front of mind.”

The third annual Japan issue from @gourmettraveller is rammed with love letters to the Land of the Rising Sun, including my firsthand, sultry experience and breakdown of jigoki mushi or, as it is directly translated, ‘hell cooking’ in Kyushu’s Oita prefecture.

There are also my favourite cellar doors to visit in Margaret River, and you’ll find my smiley face featured as a contributor this month.

PSA: no eardrums were harmed in the recording of this karaoke.
