Hey everyone!! I haven’t posted in a while so I figured I’d give an update/formal introduction.

I’m Dylan Taylor (@dylansthoughts). Some of you probably already have met me, some of you haven’t. I started Northern Mycology Club at the beginning of my freshman year at Northern Michigan University in the spring of 2021. My partner, @mmmeaddd, has been helping me run the club since we started.

After completing my first year of school, we made the decision to relocate to Chicago. I plan to pursue a further education in microbiology in Illinois while working on passions like writing, making short films, and studying Mycology.

Now that I’m not attending NMU, Northern Mycology Club’s affiliation with the school will cease. Unless we find someone to take over as President. If you’re interested, please shoot me a DM. All the hard work is done, you’d just need to pick a meeting spot for the group to meet and take photographs of the fungi you find. I could show you how to work the website and everything!! It’s a fun easy way to meet new like-minded people so I’m hoping this doesn’t have to come to an end.

Northern Mycology Club as a whole will continue operating through Instagram. I have a list of all the emails that joined through NMU, but if you’d like to be added to the email list, just shoot me your email in a message and I’ll add you to the list!

I have plans in late March to hold virtual Mycology presentations. I will continue to host online meetings as regularly as I can to keep the people of the 906 involved.

I will also be holding mushroom forays in the Chicago area as well as in Marquette whenever I am in town visiting. I will keep this Instagram page updated with upcoming events. Also, I will be creating an NMC website soon, to facilitate an easier method for joining the email list.

Thanks everyone who has been involved with NMC and I look forward to your future involvement as well. Mush love to you all ❤️

I compiled all the video clips I have of the ants herding aphids phenomenon, accompanied by @mmmeadddd accurately commentating on anti-ant-capitalism. Typical.

Late update! On Sunday 10/17 we went up to Forestville, we found some beauties!

1 - two beautiful specimen of Craterellus ignicolor! One of the “small chanterelles.”
2 - this is a genetic mutation that we found in some of the C. ignicolor. It looks like that one kind of chicken!
3 - Clavulinopsis fusiformis - the golden spindles.
4 - a beautiful representation of Amanita fulva - a ringless Amanita species.
5 - Craterellus fallax - the black trumpet, one of my favorite mushrooms ever!
6 - a strange fruiting of Cuphophyllus sp. - I’m unsure of the exact species as Cuphophyllus is a pretty new genus with a lot of subtle variation.
7 - this is an old fruiting of Amanita series Mappae. Typically we would just call this Amanita citrina, but that would be wrong as A. citrina is a European species. There are a few similar North American species that fall under the series Mappae. I have yet to decipher which of those species this one is.
8 - parasite action! This is a coral fungus being parasitized by Helminthosphaeria clavariarum - the minuscule black dots at the base of this coral is a parasitic fungus!
9 - my favorite and most elusive find of the day. Another strange Amanita. I’ve had no luck figuring this one out but I’m confident placing it under Amanita section Validae. Lemme know if anyone recognizes!
10 - some of the gang observing black trumpets in their natural habitat!
