Many thanks to 2026 Building Bridges Fellow @mo_naqvi for joining us last night at SF's historic @roxie_theater for a screening of his new film HANGING BY A WIRE, followed by a Q&A with Program Manager Lida Azim.

The documentary, directed by Naqvi and produced by @reallyreallybilalsami, recounts the events of the 2023 Battagram cable car incident, in which 8 passengers spent 14 hours suspended 900 feet above KPK's Allai Valley before being rescued by local volunteers and members of the Pakistan Army. Recognized as "a historical milestone for Pakistani documentary filmmaking" by @sanajafri14, the film has been selected as Pakistan's official submission for the International Feature Film Oscar at the 99th Academy Awards – the first documentary ever selected to represent Pakistan in this category.

HANGING BY A WIRE is exactly the kind of engaging, complex storytelling ISF is proud to support, and we could not be more thrilled for Mo and the entire doc team. Congratulations! Filmmaker Mo Naqvi stands with ISF Program Manager Lida Azim and ISF Executive Director Somayeh Nikooei.

@mo_naqvi's documentary thriller 'Hanging by a Wire' has been selected as Pakistan's official entry for the 99th Academy Awards in the International Feature Film category.

The film revisits the August 2023 cable car emergency in Battagram, when eight people, including six schoolchildren on their way to school, were left suspended about 900 feet above a ravine. It premiered at Sundance in 2026 and later played at Tribeca.

In 2023, Pakistan watched eight people hang from a cable car hundreds of metres above a ravine, waiting to see if they would make it out alive. Now, that terrifying rescue is heading into the Oscar race.

“Hanging by a Wire,” directed by Pakistani filmmaker Mohammed Ali Naqvi, has been selected as Pakistan’s official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards. It is the first documentary Pakistan has submitted for the category.

The film revisits the Battagram cable car disaster, when eight passengers, including six schoolboys, were left suspended in the air after two cables snapped. As the rescue unfolded, the entire country watched, while locals, rescuers and military personnel worked against the clock to bring them down safely.

Naqvi turns those hours into a documentary thriller, combining footage from the rescue with survivor accounts and reenactments. The film premiered at Sundance and has since travelled to international festivals.

For Pakistanis who remember watching the rescue unfold in real time, “Hanging by a Wire” is not a story they are discovering for the first time. It is a moment they already know, now being carried onto one of the world’s biggest stages.
