OBSIDIAN Presents: Our Lady of Sorrows

For generations, Black women have been expected to absorb grief without allowing it to be seen. They have buried children, buried dreams, buried pieces of themselves, and still been expected to rise each morning carrying hope for everyone else. Their mourning has too often been hidden beneath composure, mistaken for strength simply because it remained unseen.

Before institutions offered protection, before history offered recognition, Black women offered each other sanctuary. They became each other’s home when the world denied them one. They braided one another’s hair, stitched together broken spirits, carried children that were not their own, and found ways to preserve joy even in places built to erase it.

Not every act of resistance announces itself. Sometimes resistance is resting. Sometimes it is crying. Sometimes it is allowing yourself to be held without apology. In a world that has so often mistaken Black women’s resilience for invincibility, choosing softness becomes its own form of liberation.
