You don’t need to be a millionaire, an art history degree, or an introduction to the right people to start collecting art. So what do you need?

I’m excited to join the panel for Collecting 101: Building an Art Collection at the Museum of Art Fort Collins on Saturday, November 7, from 3–4 PM.

As the founder of Art Rookie and an emerging collector, I’ll be joining an award-winning artist, a Freeman’s auction house specialist, a curator and appraiser, and an established collector to talk about how to start or grow an art collection.

We’ll explore how to find work you love, navigate the art market, understand the buying process, and approach collecting in a way that makes sense for your interests and budget. The goal is to make the art world a little less intimidating and give you practical information you can actually use.

The panel is presented by the Museum of Art Fort Collins and Cornerstone Gallery, alongside the exhibitions Art & Access: New Directions in Prints and Multiples and All In with Deck of Art Fort Collins.

Art Rookie is an independent art publication for people who are curious about art, interested in collecting, and maybe a little unsure where to start.

I started Art Rookie because I wanted the kind of resource I wish I’d had when I began collecting: somewhere to ask the questions, meet the people, and learn how the art world actually works without feeling like I was supposed to know everything already.

We’re especially interested in young and new collectors, and in making the art world more transparent for the people who are just finding their way into it.

Volume II is about people. The artists, collectors, advisors, and museum professionals whose experiences offer different ways into the art world, whether you’re buying your first work or simply trying to understand what goes on behind the scenes.

Art Rookie Volume II launches this November. I’m very excited to introduce you to the people who made it possible.

The gallery world can look pretty mysterious from the outside, especially when you’re a new collector trying to understand how it all works. But galleries are more than white walls and opening nights. There’s a whole world of work, decision-making, relationships, and logistics behind what eventually makes it onto the walls.

For Art Rookie Volume II, Sam Wilson helps pull back that curtain. This is the kind of behind-the-scenes perspective I love, because the more we understand how the art world actually operates, the easier it becomes to find our footing in it.
