Today, we celebrate Robert Wade’s 81st birthday—a living legend whose photographs have touched our hearts and shaped how we remember ourselves. Through his lens, Robert has spent decades exploring and documenting lived experience from the early 1960s to today, offering images that don’t just capture moments—they carry memory, spirit, and truth. His life’s work bridges us—and the African diaspora—across time and geography: from photographing the first Pan-African Cultural Festival in 1969 in Algiers, to working closely with the Black Panthers, documenting the era with intimacy, courage, and care. Each frame reflects the essence of our culture—its beauty, its grit, its joy, and its resistance. We are profoundly honored to be a custodian of Robert’s stories, and to share this archive with our communities as it continues to grow. Happy 81st, Robert. Thank you for your vision—and for gifting us a legacy.
