Ever wonder why there are so many green chairs in Bryant Park? 💚

It all traces back to a 19th-century French tax loophole.

Parisian café owners used movable chairs to avoid paying taxes on fixed outdoor space. Moveable seating eventually spread to the Jardin du Luxembourg.

Fast forward to the 1970s: Bryant Park was once avoided by most New Yorkers due to daily muggings, a stabbing, drug sales and drug use.

Sociologist Holly Whyte convinced planners to copy Paris and bring in thousands of movable chairs in the early 1990s.

Skeptics warned every chair would be stolen, but almost none were. Giving people control over their space completely transformed the park into the safe oasis it is today.

Why the "Irving House" is a myth.

Most in Gramercy Park take this Irving Place plaque at face value. Placed by the Saint Nicholas Society in 1934, it honors Washington Irving but the Author of Sleepy Hollow never lived here.

By the time this historic NYC townhouse was built in 1844, Irving was at Sunnyside in Tarrytown. The "Irving House" myth was sparked by resident Elsie de Wolfe and confusion with his nephew, Edgar.

Today, this Manhattan landmark is a permanent record of New York City folklore.
