WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren joined Indigenous riders from several tribal nations Monday, Oct. 12, for the Indigenous Peoples’ Day Solidarity Ride, a nonpartisan initiative celebrating cultural pride, unity, and Native voter participation ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

Organized by Protect the Sacred, the approximately 10-mile ride began at the Summit west of Window Rock and traveled toward the Department of Diné Education, bringing together horseback riders, runners, and walkers in a demonstration of solidarity and civic engagement.

Leading the ride was Diné advocate Allie Young, Founder and Executive Director of Protect the Sacred. Participants also included actor Mo Brings Plenty, country music artist Dzaki Sukarno, and Pete Sands, creator of the Emmy-winning children’s series Navajo Highways.

President Nygren emphasized the importance of protecting Native voting rights and ensuring Indigenous voices help shape the future.

“Our ancestors fought for generations to protect our rights, our sovereignty, and our way of life. Voting is one of the most powerful ways we can honor their sacrifices. When we cast our ballots, we are standing up for our families, our communities, and the generations yet to come. Our voices matter, and we must never take that right for granted.”

Founded in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, Protect the Sacred has grown into a Native youth-led organization promoting leadership, cultural preservation, and civic engagement. Through initiatives like Ride for Democracy, the organization continues to encourage Native voter participation and strengthen tribal sovereignty.

The day concluded with a community celebration at the Navajo Nation Museum featuring live music, food, and youth activities.

The Solidarity Ride served as a reminder that Indigenous communities remain united in protecting their traditions, exercising their rights, and ensuring Native voices are heard for generations to come.
