After Mamma and Cyrus Dad passed away, I started travelling away on my birthday.

Which sounds very romantic until you realise it is mostly just me fleeing my own house with a suitcase.

Since 2022, this has been the ritual: leave town, go somewhere beautiful, pretend I am a person who has a perfectly normal relationship with birthdays, and avoid being at home on the day when the house remembers too much.

Because birthdays at home started feeling less like birthdays and more like an archive.

But I’ve kept one little tradition.

When I come back from the birthday escape, I order a ridiculous, beautiful cake from @bakedwithlovebyannie — the best baker in Bombay (IMHO, and I will fight you on this). I obsess over the design. We discuss flavours. I probably overthink the details. And then, on some completely random September evening, I cut the cake at home.

No birthday candles on the actual birthday.
No grand celebration.
No particular reason.

Just me, my cake, and a tiny ceremony that apparently refuses to die.

I did it again this year.

Because I think some rituals are meant to survive us.

They can change their date.
They can change their shape.
They can happen in a quieter room.

But they stay.

Maybe that is what we do with love after losing people.

We find small, slightly ridiculous ways to keep giving it somewhere to go.

Anyway. Cake was excellent. Emotional damage, also excellent. Five stars. Would repeat.

PS: Not sharing pictures of the family. Trying to keep a little corner of my life private, in my own way. ✌🏾
