This past September, I had the incredible honour of bringing my competition win to life through an unforgettable journey across Europe.

My journey started long before I met with the Modular team in the Netherlands. This trip gave me the opportunity to explore parts of the world a lot earlier than I thought I would be able to. My time with the Modular team was nothing short of astonishing. The knowledge, passion and insight I brought back from this trip will stay with me for years to come.

A special thank you to the @supermodular team for this opportunity, their incredible hospitality and willingness to share their knowledge and passion.

And a special thank you to @wb_lighting and @modsa_lighting for the amazing opportunity and experience that this competition brief made possible.

✨ From a competition win to an unforgettable European adventure…

As this year’s Modular Lighting Competition winner, Ezra Hattingh was awarded an incredible opportunity to travel to Belgium and experience the world of Modular Lighting firsthand. 🇧🇪

And why stop there? The trip became a chance to explore more of Europe too — taking in new places, cultures, architecture, design and inspiration along the way. ✈️

A special thank you to Walter Ritson from WB Lighting for his continued support of our students and for sharing his expertise with the next generation of designers.

This is just a little sneak peek… 👀
A full look at Ezra’s European adventure is coming soon!

What if architecture could reveal the invisible connections of nature? 🌿✨

Step inside Ezra Hattingh's award-winning design, inspired by the unseen relationships between the Richtersveld landscape, the iconic Quiver Tree, and the distant Benguela Current. Through thoughtful architecture, natural materials, and atmospheric lighting, Ezra has created a space that invites visitors to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with the environment.

This visionary project earned Ezra the Modular Lighting Instruments Award, along with an unforgettable trip to Modular's headquarters in Roeselare, Belgium.

A bright future starts with bold ideas. 💡✨

Congratulations to Ezra Hattingh, this year's Modular Winner, who has earned an unforgettable trip to Modular Lighting Instruments HQ in Roeselare, Belgium—home to one of the world's leading architectural lighting brands since 1980.

We're also celebrating our top three finalists, who each received the iconic Nude designer light by Modular. Designed by the late architect Joël Claisse, Nude is celebrated for its pure form, refined architectural simplicity, and beautifully recessed light source—an enduring example of thoughtful design.

We're incredibly proud to see our students recognised by industry leaders and inspired by world-class design.

Join us in congratulating Ezra and all our finalists! 👏

🥈 Meet the Designer: Kwacha Chilando

What happens when you stop designing around limitations and start designing around possibilities?

For BHC School of Design learner Kwacha Chilando, a shift in mindset became a defining moment in his Modular Competition journey. By stepping back, rethinking his approach, and allowing more room for conceptual exploration, he transformed his design into an award-winning submission.

"I was encouraged to push boundaries and think more conceptually while still staying grounded in reality. This forced me to reset and approach the design with more freedom and ambition."

We're proud to celebrate Kwacha for achieving 2nd Place in the Modular Competition in collaboration with Modular and Partners SA (MODSA).

Congratulations on this outstanding achievement and the creative thinking that made it possible.

👏 Special thanks to Walter Ritson and WB-Lighting for their continued support, mentorship, and valuable industry feedback.

🐍🏔️ Inspired by nature. Designed for harmony.

Sonrus Lodge, created by Mieke Brink, was awarded 3rd Place in the Modular Competition for its thoughtful response to the rugged landscape of Baviaanskloof.

Drawing inspiration from the movement of the Cape cobra snake, Mieke's design explores the idea of adapting rather than resisting—embedding modular pods into the mountainside, half hidden and half revealed.

The result is a space that balances openness and shelter while creating a seamless connection between architecture and nature.

Take a walkthrough of Sonrus Lodge and discover the story behind the design. ✨

👏 Congratulations to Mieke on this outstanding achievement!

Step inside Isigqi Lodge ✨

Selected as one of the Top 4 entries in the Modular Competition, Danelle Koorzen's concept draws inspiration from the rhythmic movement of Zulu culture and the natural flow of Lake St Lucia's wetland edge.

Through form, repetition, movement, and lighting, Isigqi Lodge explores how architecture can translate rhythm into space.

Take a walkthrough of Danelle's final design and discover the story behind every detail.

👏 Congratulations to Danelle on this outstanding acheivement!

Great design starts with great thinking — and great lighting should never be an afterthought. 💡
Earlier this year, BHC School of Design partnered with WB Lighting, Modular Lighting Instruments and MODSA to challenge our students to rethink the role of lighting in architecture and interior design.
Led by Walter Ritson, Head of Design at WB Lighting, students were tasked with designing a hospitality pod where lighting formed an integral part of the spatial experience, influencing atmosphere, materiality and the way people interact with a space.
The quality of work submitted was exceptional, showcasing creativity, technical understanding and thoughtful design approaches from our emerging designers.
We are proud to introduce the four finalists who stood out in this exciting challenge:
✨ Danelle Koorzen
✨ Ezra Hattingh
✨ Kwacha Chilando
✨ Mieke Brink
Over the coming weeks, we'll be sharing each finalist's project and design journey before revealing the overall winner.
Stay tuned as we celebrate the next generation of design talent.
