01 Because MF is commonly used as a slang/derogatory term and you fly by that with perfectly accessorized outfits that put A-lister front-rowers to shame. (There’s nobody in this world who does ‘cat lady’ like you do)
02 Because in communication with your husband you mean business and you keep the record.
03 Because you’re a precision lip-sticker and set the bar for that. Youngsters, take note!
04 Because the skirt that says it all, has seen it all, lived it all and that’s taken us through more than a few presidencies, taking it well into the ‘perpetual-wear’ category. Try pinning that on your moodboards MF’s!
05 Because you trusted me when I said: GO FULL MEG RYAN!, not knowing you thought she was a Guido.

Happy Birthday Gerald love! 98 years of being you in this world. Celebrating every day we share time in life. Heart of my heart.

Just this weekend we were talking about time. Experiencing it. How each day has its own time. It’s own life. A life time every day.

In thinking about time and life and experience, I remembered our recent trip on September 15, 2024 to DIA Beacon. It was Gerald’s first time experiencing Richard Serra’s work in person. I had been there 10 years ago, visiting for my first seminar class with SVA.

The opportunity to share this experience with Gerald, to be absolutely present in body mind and spirit was a gift. It recalled some writing I did for my SVA thesis in 2016. An brief excerpt I share below and the full one in comments:

“Reflecting on the weight of experience, I am reminded of the monumental steel structures of Richard Serra; of my own [now with Gerald] experience confronting them, walking around them, through them, in them. It is a reminder of how fragile we are. How delicate relationships are. How important it is to have balance. Support. The literal strength and weight of the steel enables us to perceive ourselves, different, in the moment. He [Serra] did not obscure the material, he used it, transformed it through process and time.” (see longer excerpt below in my comment)
