The First Day of School looked a little different for us this year… yesterday the little boys had their first day of grade 2 and 6, Eli started the school year with hockey school at 0700 before heading to class (thanks awesome dad for the post skate hairstyle @novasigna 💙). Hayden was a lone bus rider and Luke started a new adventure this morning, at a new school, ready to challenge his academics and athletics! Meanwhile Peyton starts @mycarletonu next week, Lane is ready for the rugby season with @surgemensrugby and Mykhayla is continuing studies @dalhousieu… we are so proud of all of you and can’t wait to see what the year brings 💙🩷🩷💙💙💙

Looking for a healthier lifestyle and better habits, but Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu still feels weird or intimidating? Don’t worry - we’ve all been there.

That’s why this week we took the opportunity to ask our friend Dan about his journey and the impact BJJ has had on his life.

So without further ado… ladies and gentlemen, Dan Stuart.

__

T2: Human history has always included people who chose to harm others or break society's rules. Today, when they're caught, many of them end up behind prison walls. You work in that reality every day. I imagine the mental load and the unspoken tension that come with that environment. How do you think BJJ helps you deal with that?

Dan: I believe BJJ helps me by teaching me how to stay calm and comfortable in uncomfortable situations. When I train with my training partners, we are always pushing each other both physically and mentally in a safe, controlled environment. Learning to stay calm and aware of my next move under pressure during rolling has helped me handle stressful situations at work, and I believe those skills carry over into all other areas of my life as well.

T2: Let’s say someone is reading this right now. They’re on the fence - they think BJJ looks cool, they know learning self-defense is important, and they’ve heard about all the benefits for body and mind… What would you say to them?

Dan: I would say that person was me, and the hardest part for me was working up the courage to go show up to my first class. Not only will you get the benefits of learning self defense, getting great exercise, better mindset etc, you will also meet awesome people along the way. The most important part is showing up.

T2: What about you? Did you have any concerns, or preconceived ideas before you started training? If yes, how do you look back on those now?

Dan: I'd say the only preconceived idea I had going in was that BJJ might not be beginner friendly and that people may not like someone just starting out. Looking back on that I can see that it's definitely not the case at TRACK2. Arthur and Luke welcomed me with open arms, as well as all the other great (continued in the comments 👇)

And of course… a very happy Father’s Day to my dad…Ron Labelle who raised 2 daughters that can fix most things, cut grass like no one’s business and are forces to be reckoned with! After you finished raising us, you stepped in to be the absolute best role model and influence for @moffattlane who has broken down all barriers and become the most genuine man following my dad’s lead. Dad, we are so grateful for you and all@you do for the kids…always our biggest fan 🩷🤍💙 #bestpoppaever💙
