A century of music, dancing, celebrations, and community gatherings. If the walls of South Park Hall could talk, they would have 100 years of stories to tell.

Located at 1253 S. Cloverdale Street, South Park Hall is celebrating a remarkable milestone in 2026: its 100th anniversary. Established in 1926, the historic dance hall has been part of South Park for generations and continues to serve as a place where people come together for music, dancing, celebrations, and community activities.

A Gathering Place Since 1926
South Park Hall was built during the 1920s as a neighborhood dance hall. Today, the space still features a large dance floor and stage—a reminder that music and dancing have been part of the building’s identity for a century. Like South Park itself, however, the Hall has experienced many changes over the decades.

After sitting underused for a period of time, the space was renovated in 2017 by local entrepreneurs Heidi Herr and Corina Luckenbach, who worked to bring the historic gathering space back to life while preserving its character. Since then, South Park Hall has hosted everything from weddings and private celebrations to community activities, classes, live music, and dancing.

Buildings can tell us a lot about a neighborhood. For South Park Hall, its history reflects something familiar about South Park itself: a community that changes, adapts, preserves its history, and continues finding reasons to come together. From the people who danced there generations ago to the families, neighbors, musicians, and community organizations using the space today, thousands of footsteps have crossed its dance floor.

Happy 100th anniversary, South Park Hall!
Here’s to the stories already written—and the many more still to come.

Only in South Park — celebrating the people, places, businesses, and stories that make our neighborhood unique.

So we can remember. The caption is from an instillation at Hibulb Cultural Center and Nature Preserve, on a field trip. We care about our students learning from local storytellers, artists and scientists, from learning about Salmon in the water behind our school to Seattle Rep’s Native Artists-in-Residence and productions like Where We Belong and Fancy Dancer, to Seattle Art Museum Double Exposure and current AI with Indigenous knowledge, MOHAI and Hibulb Cultural Center resources, we are aware that we have access to rich knowledge and expertise in our local community. We are thankful for the contributions of knowledge and those who give so much to keep legacy alive, to continually show: “We are still here.”

Preserving Our Past | Seattle Fire Department History

History has a way of reminding us that the department we serve today was built on the dedication, courage, and sacrifice of generations before us.

I recently had the privilege of sitting down with retired Battalion Chief Frank Harshfield and exploring an incredible collection of Seattle Fire Department history.

Spread across the table were original photographs, newspaper clippings, historical scrapbooks, commendations, and documents dating back more than a century.

Among these records were accounts of devastating Seattle fires, firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice, and remarkable acts of courage that might otherwise be lost to time.

One particularly meaningful part of this research is discovering the stories of firefighters whose deaths may have been connected to their service but whose names are not currently included on our department’s published line-of-duty death roster. These accounts deserve careful research and verification.

Every photograph has a story. Every newspaper clipping preserves a moment in time. And behind every name is a firefighter, a family, and a legacy.

As Historian of the Walter Kilgore Seattle Firefighters Honor Guard, I consider it a privilege to help document and preserve these stories for future generations.

A special thank you to retired BC Harshfield for sharing his time, knowledge, and this remarkable collection.

We cannot honor those who came before us if we allow their stories to be forgotten.

More to come as the research continues.
