Workshop Review | WCC Brewers Cup Judge Skills Program – Auckland 🇳🇿 " Two days. Sixteen coffee professionals. New Zealand × Australia. One table. At Machine Limited, we hosted the first New Zealand World Brewers Cup Championship Judge Skills Program - a quiet but powerful milestone for our region. Guided by Danny from Blackboard Coffee Roasters and me David from Society Coffee Roasters, we stepped fully into the discipline of Brewers Cup judging. Not theory. Practice. Score sheets. Calibration. Deliberation. Language precision. Technical accuracy. Sensory alignment. We learned how judges truly listen to a brewer’s intention. How small words change scores, how consistency builds trust, and how respect anchors every decision. But what stood out most wasn’t just skill. It was spirit. Brewers, competitors, aspiring judges — sharing stories across borders, comparing cultures, debating processing styles, defining our language, laughing between practise rounds. Sixteen professionals, choosing to hold the standard higher, together. Thank you to Steve and Una from Machine Limited for hosting us so generously. The space reflected exactly what this program represents: openness, precision, and care. This was more than a workshop. It was a reminder that judging is service. Those standards protect competitors. That collaboration strengthens regions. As everyone returns home, to cafés, roasting rooms, and competition stages, they carry sharper skills, clearer frameworks, and a deeper commitment to our coffee community. Grateful for the trust. 2 Years of SCSC: A Reflection Tomorrow will be 2 years since Nelson, Joseph, and I sat down in a cafe in KL, planning the start of what eventually became SCSC. For the past 2 years, SCSC was my whole life. SCSC was a passion project turned journey of excitement, adventure, and, deep down, a search for a sense of identity and belonging. I think about those early days often, especially now that I've handed over all my duties, along with what was once my whole sense of purpose and motivation. In the 3 years I've been here, Auckland has become my second home. These years have taught me what it means to live a life filled with purpose, and that growth always comes in unexpected ways. At the beginning, there were very dark days, but learning to love that part of myself became my strength to appreciate the bright days that came after. I'm proud of what I've accomplished here; the road ahead may not be clear, but I'm grateful to know I no longer walk it alone. To the coffee industry and the association @nzspecialtycoffee, the guidance and support, time and time again, have been unreal. More than just what's on the surface, it's the trust and faith that truly push us to the heights we've reached. Especially our Day Ones and biggest supporters, @societycoffee.nz (@ka.fe.dave) @rumours_coffee (@d.uuyl & @catellena_g1) @milklabnz (@thisisleon) @anchorfp.nz (@rob_hulse & @the.j.twin) @eternalcoffee.nz (@da_yjh) @peacockejosh @lamarzocconz @atomiccoffeeroasters, your commitment to our growth moves me; you have my deepest gratitude and respect. To my team, thank you for trusting in what we believed in, and in me, to lead you. For going above and beyond, not out of obligation, but out of the passion that drives you. I am forever grateful. I've learnt so much through everyone I've met on this journey, and I will carry pieces of you all in everything I do. What started off as an idea during some of the lowest points of my life turned into a movement that has since changed my life. This may be the end of my chapter at SCSC, but I am confident that both I and SCSC will continue to blossom for years to come.
