Curiosity is a dangerous thing. It feels like doing research, fun and interesting, but also puts on weight.😢

Best of Phoenix named Lōco Style Grindz the Best Hawaiian Restaurant in Phoenix, so naturally we had to find out how it compares to Moku Hawaiian Grill, ...., and more.

Rice🔥
Both are good. Lōco gets a slight edge because the rice soaks up some of the meat juices.

Chicken Katsu🔥
Both are excellent. Lōco's is tender and juicy with a slightly thicker coating and a unique special flavor from a special seasoning I couldn't tell. Moku's has a thinner crust, thicker meat and, more importantly, a stronger chicken flavor with its own fat that shines even without sauce.

Kalbi🔥
Moku doesn't offer kalbi, so this round goes to Lōco. Tender, juicy, well-balanced seasoning, accurate cooking, and surprisingly the same price as chicken. Very good deal. It is good kalbi but tastes similar to other good kalbi.

Kalua Pork🔥
Both are very good. Lōco delivers nice smoky flavor, but Moku's is more moist and has a stronger pork aroma with nicer texture and taste. Moku wins this one.

Ribeye Steak🔥
Lōco recommended the steak over teriyaki chicken, and they were right. Tender, flavorful, balanced seasoning and an excellent value. Better than Moku's steak since it is freshly made, and of course better deal. But one should finish the steak ASAP.

Macaroni Salad🔥
Lōco's flavor is deeper and richer. Moku's is lighter and somehow keeps you coming back for another bite, especially alongside the kimchi slaw. Slight edge to Moku.

❤️Overall, both are excellent Hawaiian restaurants with different strengths.

Lōco shines with its kalbi, steak and katsu. But when comparing the fundamentals more, chicken katsu, kalua pork, and macaroni salad, Moku shows more restraint, balanced technique and lets the ingredients speak for themselves more.

Lōco is really good, but it doesn't quite create that urge to keep eating bite after bite.

In PHX, food that is balanced, less aggressive, and allows the ingredients to shine is more enjoyable.

From that point of view, Moku wins.

Although we haven’t been to every famous Hawaiian spot in Phoenix or the Ninth Island, we’ve visited enough to know when a place truly stands out.

So far, Moku Hawaiian Grill Phoenix is one of the best Hawaiian restaurant we’ve been to, including those in Hawaii itself.

1. Musubi🔥

Moku’s musubi is better than the famous Musubi Cafe in Honolulu.

The Spam is juicy and beautifully cooked, with its flavor fully developed. It is slightly salty on its own, but perfectly balanced when paired with the rice. The nori has a strong, pleasant seaweed aroma, and the rice is cooked just right, moist without being mushy, and never dry.

One bite tells you everything.

2. Chicken Katsu🔥

Not uniquely Hawaiian, but exceptionally well executed.

The crust is thin and crisp, never greasy. The chicken is thick yet juicy, and seems to have just enough fat content to amplify the flavor. We’ve been to many Japanese katsu restaurants, and Moku’s version still stands out.

3. Kalua Pork🔥

Slow-roasted to perfection, with a beautiful balance of lean meat and rendered fat.

The seasoning is restrained, allowing the natural pork flavor to shine. Rich, aromatic, smoky, and never dry. Honestly, I find it even more balanced than many versions I’ve had in Hawaii.

4. Teriyaki Chicken🔥

Nicely grilled with excellent char from the caramelized sweetness. Well-seasoned, tender, and juicy.

5. Macaroni Salad & Kimchi🔥

The kimchi is not a traditional Korean-style kimchi. It’s made more like a slaw, refreshing, balanced, and not overly sweet or sour.

The macaroni is cooked al dente and is simple, balanced but satisfying.

6. Poke🔥

Well-seasoned and comparable to good Hawaiian poke. The tuna quality is solid, and the pricing is honest.

That said, the mochiko chicken was a bit oversalted, and some of the other dishes were not as memorable as the items mentioned above.

Before COVID, they didn’t weigh the meat and portions were enormous. Nowadays they do, but the portions are still generous.

Phoenix has a relatively strong Hawaiian food scene. One day, we’ll review every Hawaiian restaurant in town and see who truly deserves the crown.
