MG&Co. is an AIGA 50 Books | 50 Covers of 2023 winner! We are honored that two of our projects have been recognized as 50 Books winners this year: “Inhabited Machines” and “Cite 104: The Architecture and Design Review of Houston.”

The 40th anniversary issue of Cite celebrates the journal as a communal anchor and a unique platform for Houston, connecting scholarship with public advocacy around critical urban, societal, and environmental issues. Guest edited by Reto Geiser, the first part of the publication contains an illustrated oral history with founding members of the Rice Design Alliance. This section is printed in two colors, with the yellow gradually fading out. In the second part fifty voices join the conversation and reflect openly on Houston in words and images. Broken into three subsections, this part covers areas that have shaped the city in the past and continue to do so as we move forward. While the book is based on a rigid grid, different content categories are distinguished with specific typographic voices and character. Density and openness, spacious and playful title pages, images ranging from illustration to full bleed, and immersive photo essays, are modulated throughout the book to create a pace of reading that engages the reader. The book is printed on extremely light, yet voluminous paper, which gives it an unexpected soft feel,

Congratulations also to @chris_ortiiz who joined our design team for this project, to @dza.druck for their impeccable production, to all the amazing contributors, including @_leonidfurmansky who contributed the iconic cover photograph and @dance_at_opening who contributed stunning photography inserts, and to the whole team at the Rice University School of Architecture (@ricearch)—especially @archigor and @nance_dance_pants —and to @marianicanor and @yhprumkcaj who invited us to redesign the journal for issue 102.

Houston Talks is an exhibition at Basket Books & Art to celebrate the launch of Cite 104 and highlight the rich history of the Rice Design Alliance’s Cite magazine through its four decades run. The display includes archival artifacts, iconic covers, out of print issues, and exquisite photographic works by Leonid Furmansky, Paul Hester, and Marianne Mueller. These images, both past and present, represent some of the most recognizable spaces and places of Houston, in both its glory and folly.

The exhibition is on display at Basket Books & Art (115 Hyde Park Blvd., Houston) until the end of this week, Sunday, December 10, 2023.

Exhibition curated and designed by Reto Geiser.
