After the wedding, there was a feeling of listlessness. Everything we had been working towards, focusing on for three concentrated months, was over. We weren’t taking a honeymoon immediately because I was diving in Australia the following month. So everything went back to normal, very quickly. Our friends left, and we went back to work. It was more difficult than I thought, to just go back, to put this experience behind me. When asked if it was the best night of my life, I struggled to answer, caught in the idea of a day in the past being the best day I’ll ever experience, that nothing in my future would measure up.

It frustrated me for weeks, but eventually, I came to understand that night not really as a legal milestone in Patrice and my life, but as just one small step in our growth together. It became proof not necessarily of our commitment, but of our understanding of each other: what we like, what we value, who we care for. And an acknowledgement that not all of those things always exactly align, but that when they come together, they can make a really great day, one of so many to come.

if we’ve talked at all in the past year- you’ll know i got into the nyc marathon through the lottery- and it has since become my entire personality of 2025. guess i’ll need a new one now!

i had no context to what this marathon meant til i moved here and experienced it myself for the first time- as a hungover bystander on the streets of williamsburg. i found myself welling up with tears- crying?! because people are running?! sounds crazy but every new yorker will tell you the same. it took running it myself 3 years later to finally understand and feel something that’s so special and indescribable to this city and for that i am so grateful.

Everyone said the NYC Marathon was the best day in NYC and I have to say, they were right. I’m so beyond proud of you, Monica ❤️
