Today is World Environmental Education Day.

My career in environmental education was one that I fell into as an aimless college student, though it quickly became what most of you all know as one of my defining personality traits. The work I’ve done at Mass Audubon has afforded me opportunities I could not be more grateful for - working outdoors, meeting and learning from other wonderful educators, and teaching younger future environmental stewards, side-by-side with some breathtaking animal ambassadors. Most importantly, it has provided me a purpose; I wholeheartedly believe that the work that I do, alongside my fellow educators, is crucial to the preservation of the planet we live on. Advocating for and protecting the planet starts with having a reason to give a damn about it in the first place. Moments like cherished childhood memories at summer nature camp, seeing a barred owl for the first time at school, or hiking in the woods with your family on the weekends are all the little seeds that inspire hope and a sense of empathy for the world we inhabit.

Caring about the environment means caring about its people too. As we extend this empathy to those around us, I urge you not to turn away to the injustices happening in Minneapolis and beyond at the hands of our federal law enforcement and immigration agents. Speak up, call your senators, donate to mutual aids, and continue to give MANY damns about innocent people being wrongly framed as criminals, violently ripped from their homes, and outright killed (then called a “fuckin bitch”). I believe in our ability, whether you’re an environmental educator or not, to help sow these seeds of hope and empathy for a better future.
