This is the #mmiw national week of action & today is Red Dress Day - I wanted to share some books that focus on Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women that are a mix of memoir & fiction because we need as many voices being raised in as many ways as possible about this crisis that includes the statistic that Native women are murdered 10x more than national average.

Please see @niwrc for more information & calls to action

Saw @archiving.books do a post like this recently and decided I wanted to do one of my own after a trip to the local big name bookstore!

No knock against this big bookstore- I used to work at one of this chain & it was one of the best jobs I’ve ever had. Of course I always support independent bookstores first (and we’ve go a TON here in #ROC) but big stores like this one play an important role in keeping the written word alive and at the forefront in our culture, which helps everyone in the book game.

But I’m always a LIBRARY FIRST dude. Aside from the savings visiting my library blesses my wallet with, libraries are a CRITICAL piece of ensuring intellectual freedom and information access for everyone in our communities!

So here’s a few books that caught my eye today that sound great and I’ll be putting hold requests in WITH THE QUICKNESS! @ironlibrary see you soon 😘🤣🥰

✨True Crime✨

SEARCHING FOR SAVANNA by @monagable is an excellent, but heartbreaking book. The true story of Savanna’s disappearance is told in depth while also bringing the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women forward. Even if you’re familiar with this terrible issue, I strongly recommend reading this book and learning more. I also think it’s very important to read different voices year round and not just during specific months or time period, but I’m all for whatever gets you reading.

🌹 Searching For Savanna: The Murder of One Native Woman and the Violence Against the Many 🌹

This had been on my TBR for a long time, and kicked off my intention of reading more nonfiction again in 2025.

Written by a journalist, this follows the graphic case of Savanna Greywind, a young North Dakota woman from the Spirit Lake Sioux tribe, who was murdered and had her baby stolen from her womb while she was eight months pregnant.

It also follows how Greywind’s murder breathed new fire into the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women movement and recounts the severe lack of justice and support MMIW cases receive nationwide, as well as traces the history of violence against native women.

Dating back to Western expansion, it was a settler colonial strategy to commit violence against Indigenous women and children to force the hand of Indigenous men into conflict. Now, legal grey areas regarding crimes committed on reservations and generations of racist indoctrination enable violent perpetrators to continue this vicious cycle.

This was an extremely brutal read, but an educational one. I was originally a bit dubious about a white woman writing this narrative, but I appreciated the palpable care Gable put into honoring Savanna’s life - so much so that I truly felt like I got to know her by the end of her narration of Greywind’s experiences leading up to her murder and was crushed to remember her untimely death prevented her from realizing so many of her dreams.

At one point, Gable also reflects on a conversation with some Indigenous women while reporting on the case where she recounts her grandmother’s Chickasaw heritage, despite growing up only having white experiences. I thought this was a really interesting and respectful way to handle racial identity.

Please check TWs before reading as this is an extremely difficult one, but a worthwhile read to bring visibility into the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women movement.

[image ID in alt text] Against a brown stucco-esque background, the cover of Searching for Savanna is made to look taped up like a photo. Next to it is bulleted text which reads:

• Nonfiction centering the history and continuation of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women.
• Zeroes in on a horrific case of a murder of Savanna Greywind, a young Indigenous woman who was eight months pregnant.
• Follows Savanna’s life leading up to her death, her murder investigation and trial, and the survival or her family.
• Also tracks how white settler colonialsism set a precedent for violence against Native women that continues today.

Author Mona Gable will be reading from her book Searching For Savannah, which is extensive and gripping research on the disappearance of Savannah La-Fontaine-Graywind, who was eight months pregnant. Her book underscores the shocking epidemic of violence against Native American women in America and the societal consequences of the government’s complicity in the crisis. In the #MeToo era, the voices of Indigenous and Native American women have been forgotten in the recent conversations of gendered violence. Gable’s book is an urgent contribution to this vital subject.
