The secret world of Rafa Macarrón : studio visit & interview 🦒👜

Once you arrive on an unassuming industrial street on the outskirts of Madrid, the only sign you’re in the right place is graffiti doodles on one of the unit doors. Once inside, you’re transported into the imaginative world of Spanish artist Rafa Macarrón.

It was probably the biggest artist studio I’ve ever been to: huge canvases in different stages of completion stretched against the walls and a literal sea of painting supplies. 🫟 At the centre of the room lay piles of perfectly arranged oil pastels.

My favourite part?
The sketches of creatures can be spotted all over the space: on chairs, doors and even the floor.

Rafa Macarrón is a self-taught artist and has exhibited in places such as CAC Málaga and Fundación La Nave Salinas. You might recognise his earlier work - super colourful, filled with strange little (or big) creatures, often with tiny 3D eyes literally stuck onto the canvas. There’s usually a slightly twisted giraffe or dog hiding in there too.

His newer work feels like a shift: more muted and “grown-up” colours, moving more into the realm of fashion.

His works are a real labour of love. The patterns and textures in the clothes are incredibly intricate, and when you look closely at his older paintings, you’ll find so many tiny characters, some with their own story 👀. No wonder he enjoys a glass of champagne on his days off. 🥂

Thank you so much for having me @rafamacarron and his team @moncho_paz_ & R.

Mini & Maxi – Dressed to Match (Artist Edition)

Rafa Macarrón: Introspective at Galería Cayón, Madrid @galeriacayon

Throwback to such a lovely Rafa Macarrón @rafamacarron opening -
a pleasure to see the show in person and meet the artist, his family, and friends… and somehow we both ended up matching the paintings haha 🎨

Who is Rafa Macarrón?
He’s a Spanish self-taught artist in his 40s. You might recognise his earlier work-super bright, colourful, neon, with these strange little (or big) creatures, often with tiny 3D eyes literally stuck onto the canvas here and there. There’s often a slightly twisted giraffe or dog hiding in there. 🦒

His newer work feels like a shift-less neon, more muted and “grown-up” colours. It’s hard to fully capture in photos, but the textures are incredible. He’s really created his own visual language, especially in the way he paints clothes and fabrics.

I also love how his characters appear in different scales-works on paper feel like miniature fragments of his monumental paintings.

His work has also been shown in places like CAC Málaga and Fundación La Nave Salinas.

Stay tuned for pics from a studio visit 👀
P.S. I’ve never seen so many pastels in one place 🤫

🗓️ The exhibition is open until May 8, 2026

🗞️ @nytimes Critic’s Pick: ‘Mark Bradford. You Don’t Have to Tell Me Twice’

‘Here the oversize likeness of the artist may sprawl across the floor, but Mark Bradford still stands: a giant,’ writes @john_vincler.
