This International Day of Rural Women, we reflect on a hard truth: women make up close to 60% of India’s agricultural workforce, yet hold less than 15% of agricultural land titles.

Without recognition as farmers, women are often excluded from the credit, schemes, and services that could shape their livelihoods for the better.

The Maharashtra Women Farmers Empowerment Act, 2026, seeks to change this. The landmark legislation provides official recognition to women engaged in farming and allied activities—regardless of land ownership—and opens access to institutional credit, government schemes and other entitlements.

What can change when a woman who farms is formally recognised as a farmer?

In Maharashtra, the answer is beginning to take shape. Women Farmer Certificates were rolled out under the Women Farmers Empowerment Act on 2 October, recognising women engaged in farming and allied activities—even when they do not own the land.

This recognition could help open access to credit, insurance, government schemes, extension services and other entitlements. But the real measure of success will be when women themselves experience these changes and tell their stories firsthand, and when the new law leads to stronger rights and better livelihoods on the ground.

Do you know what listening to animal sounds can reveal?

Most of us are familiar with the sounds of nature, like waking up to the sound of the dawn chorus, the symphony of bird calls that happens every morning. But, sounds like this are more than background noise, they’re valuable data.

Bioacoustics is a field of research that focuses on why and how living organisms produce and use sound. Researchers in India are using sound to locate and identify animals like bats, understand the behaviors of elephants in Assam, and understand the effectiveness of conservation strategies on birds in the Western Ghats.

For these stories and more, listen to “Wild Frequencies,” a 3-part podcast series where @mongabayindia shares the science and stories of sound from some of India’s leading bioacoustic researchers. The podcast is available on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

Tell us your favorite nature sound or ask a question about bioacoustics in the comments ⬇️

Happy National Wildlife Week 2026! 🌿✨

Celebrated from Oct 2–8, this year’s core theme is all about Connecting Habitats. When forests and grasslands get fragmented by roads, cities, and farms, wild animals get trapped in tiny "islands."

Connecting these habitats through eco-corridors allows elephants, tigers, and smaller species to roam safely, find food, and keep ecosystems healthy! 🐆🍃

How are you celebrating nature week? Tell me below! 👇

Every frame has a story. Pull back and you get behaviour and context; move in and you get a nice portrait. Both are worth shooting. Only one tells you where the photograph was taken, and what was going on when it was.

Princess of Gothangaon - Tigress F2, sitting down in the middle of a wet road. Four jeeps behind her. Rain coming down.

A tight crop would have given a sharper portrait but, it would also have thrown away everything that matters here - the road, the vehicles, the rain, the decision she's making about all of it.

Dr. K. Ullas Karanth, Founder and Emeritus Director of CWS, highlights concerns over lack of prey availability to support tiger reintroduction in the Cardamom Rainforest Landscape of southwestern Cambodia. An article published in Mongabay on 24th September 2026 highlights his contributions to Mongabay’s June report, where he cautioned that a tiger release into forests without sufficient prey is unlikely to succeed.

Following the concerns raised by Dr. Karanth, and fellow conservation scientists, India and Cambodia have moved the plan to reintroduce Bengal tigers into Cambodia to 2028. Read ahead at link in bio.

To know more about Dr. Karanth's work in big cat conservation, and his journey with tigers, read his latest book, ‘Tiger Memories: My Life in Wildlife Conservation’. You can grab a copy via, Amazon India, Penguin Random House or Amazon US from the link in bio.

Over 1,500 wild animals lost to unnatural deaths—electrocution, train collisions, and poisoning.
This is not a local conflict—it’s a national crisis! Across India over the last 25 years, systemic failure and negligence have cost precious lives on both sides.
No more innocent lives should be lost to a broken system. It is time for every citizen to take responsibility and demand a permanent solution!
