In 2019, I documented a powerful art installation on both sides of the Rio Grande, The Border Tuner @bordertuner by @lozanohemmer. For two days, I photographed history unfolding in our region, witnessing human connection through art, community and technology. “Border Tuner” is a large-scale, participatory art installation designed to interconnect the cities of El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. Powerful searchlights make “bridges of light” that open live sound channels for communication across the US-Mexico border. Thanks to @eeedgaaar and Kerry Doyle, who continuously support local artists, I was invited to collaborate and create the photographic documentation for the Border Tuner Archive and Book. Today, both the Book and the Documentary Film are a reality and they are being presented in El Paso — Sunday, April 26 at 12:00 pm at @elpasomacc Juárez — Monday, April 27 at 6:00 pm at Centro Cultural de las Fronteras UACJ. Many of my teachers pointed me to the work of @susanmeiselas . I studied her photographs and followed her career for years, so meeting her now feels like a true full circle moment. I had the honor of showing part of my BORDERS series alongside her work in the companion exhibition for CROSSINGS at @photocenternw . Seeing my work in conversation with someone who I’ve admired for so long is incredibly meaningful. I created BORDERS 18 years ago and it keeps teaching me about timelessness and purpose. I’m grateful to @fotofeminas and @veronicasanchis for always impulsing my work, and to @photocenternw for the invitation and bringing us together @gray_sanmartin @elizabethzpineda_fotografia

This exhibition is curated by Verónica Sanchis Bencomo @veronicasanchis made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature; and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. Foto Féminas: 10 Year Anniversary is an exhibition that celebrates a decade of @fotofeminas the platform founded by Verónica Sanchis Bencomo to promote the work of Latin American and Caribbean women and non-binary photographers. Featuring multiple artists from the Foto Féminas’ community, the show highlights diverse voices and visual narratives from the Latin region. The exhibition also includes a reading library of publications. About Foto Féminas: Since 2015, Foto Féminas has organized and produced photo exhibitions in Argentina, China, Guatemala, Peru, Chile and Mexico.

Students from the Social Impact program at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire visited El Paso for a special presentation of @whatremains.art and LA TRENZA. We met in @abarafrontiers with @desertborders where we gathered to share our stories and braid the special objects that the students brought to represent their unique journey. These objects will travel with the art installation LA TRENZA in it’s future travels. Special thanks to @crystal2687 from @lasamericasimmigrantadvocacy for the amazing and profound work they do to help alíviate the unmeasurable crisis on migration, not only in our border but around the world.

L A T R E N Z A, @whatremains.art , travels for the first time out of the border to be exhibited in @labnuevoleon in “Encuentro internacional sobre movilidad humana”. @mabelweber and @monicalozano document the moment of taking the piece out of the bags that transported it to Monterrey, Mexico. Our profound installation piece made of discarded objects left behind by immigrants that walked the desert of Ciudad Juarez and El Paso TX, very close to the border wall, along with donated objects of participants who crossed the border and now live in the United States. The braid seems to be alive and breathing while being extended and it holds on tightly to all types of objects that represent the many stories of human mobilization that have been visible and invisible. Music composed by @jmoralesrush video by @monicalozano , art piece by @whatremains.art and all collaborators, graphic arts @iris_eme_ele . ¿Qué objetos llevarías contigo si tuvieras que dejar tu casa hoy? La Secretaría de Cultura de Nuevo León participa en el Encuentro Internacional sobre Movilidad Humana 2023, organizado en colaboración con la Secretaría General de Gobierno y la Secretaría de Igualdad e Inclusión, a través de la exposición de arte multimedia titulada “Lo que permanece" de la iniciativa @artseverywhere.ca Esta exposición, nos brinda la oportunidad de reflexionar sobre un tema tan relevante y actual como es la movilidad humana, a través de las obras de las artistas e investigadoras Mónica Lozano, Mabel Weber, Adriana Álvarez e Iris Morales. Inaugurada como parte de la agenda de arranque del Encuentro, la exposición abona a las actividades de la semana y estará abierta al público de forma gratuita en LABNL hasta el 14 de julio. Como Secretaría de Cultura entendemos que reconocer la gran riqueza de costumbres, idiomas, tradiciones y formas de ser que se genera con la migración es fundamental para la construcción de sociedades más humanas, gobiernos más democráticos y abiertos. #CulturaNL
