MONO, Snowdrop (Temporary Residence, 2026).

Eight pieces, each named for a flower you would lay on a grave and subtitled with what the flower means: hope, loyal love, remembrance, an unchanging heart, I will never forget you, eternal gratitude, I miss you.

The band say it was written for the people they have lost and for anyone sitting with that, and the record plays like it, strings and choir from Chicago wrapped around Taka's guitar rather than piled on top of it. Brad Wood recorded it at Electrical Audio last September, Bob Weston mastered it in Portugal, which is about as good a chain as post-rock gets. Gatefold with Ahmed Emad Eldin's garden-in-the-clouds painting across the inside, red marbled double vinyl inside that. It is the sort of record you put on once alone before you play it for anyone else.

MONO《Snowdrop》(Temporary Residence, 2026)。 Side A，〈Snowdrop〉，「Hope」。

So much post ‘85 vinyl. What has gotten into me? Hot deals and fate, I tell you. Walking Cloud and Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered and the Sun Shined (2012 RI, Human Highway) by @monoofjapan is beautiful. I know describing Mono as merely a post rock band, even one of the greats, is reductive. They orchestrate. I will say this album name is the most post rock title ever (love it). Eat Pray Thug (2015, Megaforce/ Greenhead) by Heems @nehrujackets sends me back home to New York. In the mid-late aughts, at the height of independent music blogs, I wrote reviews. Like everyone else, I was sent Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell by indie rap trio Das Racist, which regardless of your thoughts on the track, it really captured the zeitgeist in NYC at the time. I blasted it in my Bushwick art studio apartment. Fast forward, I was recently crate digging the new arrivals at @used_kids_records in Columbus, Ohio and I spied a copy of this album. Fated. Side note: super smart record. Lucifer (2012, Mexican Summer) by @peakinglights is such a wonderfully weird album of psychedelic synth dub tracks. I took a chance on it because the cover reminded me of a cross between a La Düsseldorf and a Cluster album (do you know which ones?). It’s not sonically in that vein, but rad nonetheless. Neptune (2016, Domino) by @higherauthorities is also so weird and fun with synthesis and vocal layers, electric piano and a drum machine. This is ideal. This record def has some Nue!/Velvet adjacency.

THE ARGUMENT
一場音樂節可以看到MONO、ENVY、TOE、還有we lost the sea…
