THE SUBSTRATE OF EXTRACTION (10/23-24) FEATURED ARTWORKS_PART 1 CLEAN LIFE by Marina Lisa Komiya @monosugoiame investigates the biological, ethical, and political systems surrounding cultured meat and cellular technologies. A video is projected onto a circular screen resembling a petri dish, featuring real-time microscopic images of cells alongside a voice-over generated by an AI trained on Komiya’s voice. Beginning with questions around animal rights and the promise of “clean” meat, the work expands into questions of cellular rights, abortion, veganism, greenwashing, and the political conditions surrounding life and reproduction. The installation also includes a series of images created using human HeLa cells and chicken cells, including a portrait of Henrietta Lacks, from whom the original HeLa cells were taken without her knowledge. - Curated by Amy Xiaofan Jiang @amyjiang517 Presented by @uaad.art and @mesh_art_center Supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan; Japan Arts Council; CG-ARTS; WAN: Art & Tech Creators Global Network; and Japan Creator Support Fund. RSVP link in bio! In Decomposition of Aspergillus luchuensis, @monosugoiame examines the colonial history of fermentation, tracing how Okinawan kōji mold was introduced to Korea under Japanese rule while traditional Korean brewing practices were suppressed. Using mold to transform imagery inspired by the wartime propaganda manga Yamato Family, the work explores how ideals of family, purity, and national identity were constructed through colonial power. Through microbial decomposition, Marina challenges these structures and blurs the boundaries between decay and fermentation. Giant Micro Plastic by Tsuyoshi Anzai @an2ai transforms fragments of microplastic into monumental sculptural forms. By dramatically enlarging materials that are normally invisible to the human eye, Anzai shifts microplastic from an overlooked environmental residue into something physically and visually impossible to ignore. The work begins with a material produced through human consumption and industrial systems, but one that has since escaped its original purpose and entered larger ecological cycl

Introducing the featured artists of THE SUBSTRATE OF EXTRACTION, a bio art exhibition presented by UAAD (@uaad.art) and MESH_ARTS (@mesh_art_center). Swipe Right👉 . . . 📍 MESH_ARTS, The Old American Can Factory, Brooklyn 📅 October 23–24, 2026 Curated by Amy Xiaofan Jiang @amyjiang517 Featuring Marina Lisa Komiya @monosugoiame Tsuyoshi Anzai @an2ai Shahira Hammad @spontaneousorder William Takao Eliot @takaomakesthings Yan Shao @ss.syan Supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan; Japan Arts Council; CG-ARTS; WAN: Art & Tech Creators Global Network; and Japan Creator Support Fund. RSVP link in bio! Tsuyoshi Anzai @an2ai is a Japanese artist whose practice explores the relationship between humans and plastic through sculpture, photography, and simple mechanical systems. Using improvised combinations of everyday objects and motors, he creates machines that reveal unexpected relationships between human-made materials and their environments. In recent years, his practice has focused on microplastics and the ways these nearly invisible materials circulate beyond their original functions. In his work Giant Micro Plastic, he transforms fragments of microplastic into monumental sculptural forms. By dramatically enlarging materials that are normally invisible to the human eye, Tsuyoshi shifts microplastic from an overlooked environmental residue into something physically and visually impossible to ignore. Lisa Marina Komiya @monosugoiame explores new forms of reproduction through a queer perspective, working across biotechnology, performance, video, manga, and other media. Their practice examines the relationships between bodies, technology, ecology, and systems of power. Marina is also the host of the queer artist platform “FAQ?” and a member of the collective “Reproductive Garden Project.” In their work CLEAN LIFE, Marina investigates the biological, ethical, and political systems surrounding cultured meat and cellular technologies. Projected onto a circular screen resembling a petri dish, the work combines real-time microscopic imagery of cells with an AI-generated voice-over trained on Marina’s voice. 写真：@my_blue_zine

As part of Retooling: Art, Ecology, & Climate Adaptation, we present an afternoon of Lightning Presentations bringing together artists, researchers, and @nyuniversity students whose work engages with climate and ecology. Featured artists: Alex Nathanson (@alexnathanson), Laura Splan (@laurasplan), Marina Komiya (@monosugoiame), Katie Fisher (@katiefisher_km), & Gesche Würfel (@gewuerfel). Selected Students: Elise Silvestri, Yi Shi, Jianhao Zheng, Nalini Kantheti, and Yumeng (Ilsa) Li Through a series of 15-minute presentations, participants will share projects, research, experiments, methodologies, and works in progress that approach creative and interdisciplinary practice as a form of ecological tool-making. Across diverse disciplines and approaches, each presenter explores how art, science, technology, research, and community-based practices can develop accessible pedagogies, methods, and tools that expand environmental understanding and support responses to climate change. The afternoon is intended to generate discussion, interdisciplinary exchange, and collective inquiry, using the presentations as starting points for sharing knowledge, testing ideas, and considering how creative practices can contribute to more accessible and participatory approaches to climate action. ✈️3rd Cohort KOMIYA Lisa Marina is about to begin their NYC residency! @monosugoiame —Research on Bioart Practices from a Queer Perspective During their residency, they will explore bioart laboratories and spaces in New York where queer communities and ecological practices intersect. How do artists and researchers respond to the relationships between social systems and biotechnology? How do they address the climate crisis, ecosystems, and the future of reproductive technologies—issues deeply entangled with capitalism and politics? Through research and dialogue across diverse perspectives, their project explores how art can function as a form of resistance, particularly for queer and marginalized communities.
