When John Darnielle and I discovered a shared reverence for songwriter Rich Mullins, it seemed inevitable that I should share with him some of the prayers I’d made into songs under both of their tutelage.

This week, listen to one of my favorite songs Rich wrote with JD & Matt Douglas accompanying. Rachel Ruff Cuyler put this little video together for us and look at that, we’re in show business now.

You can pre-order the opaque pink vinyl from my online store now or from your online stuff or your local record store probably gonna get it in you can ask them about it I guess? I honestly still don’t know a lot about distribution, sounds like.

When I was a worship minister, I would sing @mountaingoatsmusic songs during Saturday or Sunday services. That’s a kind of funny sort of preface.

A massive thank you to John Darnielle of @mountaingoatsmusic for popping by before his gig at the Albert Hall to sign copies of Devil House and This Year. He left us with some great book and tea recommendations - what a lovely guy!

Another spin for the day. Everything this band does is gold. This is their newest and it’s already a classic.

Quite possibly the most fun I've ever had in church and it definitely seemed as if @mountaingoatsmusic very much enjoyed playing @christianskirche for @popseasons_hamburg
Also a great and very well fitting opening set by @steadycraig

A SHORT STAY IN HELL hardcover by @sciencehoroscope and Strange Violin Editions

Two things made me say “Wow” this week. The ending of MONSTER: THE LIZZIE BORDEN STORY and the ending of this book, A SHORT STAY IN HELL.

It is a short book. But holy cow do you feel the endlessness and meaninglessness of time.

A Mormon man dies and discovers his religion wasn’t the true one. Hell is personalized and dependent on what you liked in life. He liked books, so he ends up in an enormous library, tasked with finding the book that tells the story of his life. The rest of his story, meanwhile, is told through relationships with the other humans he meets in hell.

So utterly bleak.

DEVIL HOUSE audiobook by @monsterhat and @macmillan.audio

DEVIL HOUSE is a novel in stories. In story one, a true-crime writer moves into a murder house so he can immerse himself in the crime scene and the vibes of its former inhabitants. Subsequent stories explore the crime(s) committed there from other POVs—the perpetrators, the parents of the victims, the writer’s friend. It’s an interesting, all-encompassing approach. This story grows, expands, and resolves in the same quiet place it began.

THE PASSION ACCORDING TO G.H. ebook by Clarice Lispector and @ndpublishing

A book both exhaustive and exhausting. The plot is simple: a woman enters a room furnished with a wardrobe. She opens the wardrobe, sees a cockroach, and slams the door on it. It dies. That story takes 200 pages to tell; followed by an even more intense interior monologue / crisis of faith than what preceded it. THE PASSION is formally innovative and has value as a literary experiment, but it demands more effort than some readers may want to give it. Thanks, @megitate, for the recommendation!
