About 40 American growers are saving Palestinian seeds that could vanish with Gaza’s farmland, and one New Jersey farm grew more than 9,000 seeds in one season. Since 2023, only 1.5% of Gaza’s farmland has stayed undamaged and accessible. So growers are saving heirloom varieties that years of conflict have put at risk. The star of the project is an okra plant that grows nine feet tall. It’s called Bamyeh Falastinia, native to what is now the West Bank, and it’s been a staple in Palestinian kitchens for centuries. Lana Mustafa, a Palestinian American in Clifton, New Jersey, has stewarded these okra seeds for 10 years. She needed more land, so she brought them to City Green Farm Eco-Center. That’s where the plants produced more than 9,000 seeds in 2024. They’re part of the Seed Protectors Project, launched in 2024 by the Palestine Heirloom Seed Library, based in the West Bank village of Battir. U.S. rules limit seed imports, so the U.S. seeds came from the Palestinian diaspora, mostly passed down from grandmothers and mothers. Palestinian farmers have long grown “ba’al” crops, which survive on only the moisture stored in the soil from winter. Nate Kleinman of the Experimental Farm Network says crops like these may help farmers handle the extreme climate ahead. The goal is to send the seeds home when possible. Did you know that Newark has had food scarcity issues since the 1800’s? The recent worldwide pandemic exasperated those issues further and organizations like Urban Agriculture (@urban_ag_coop ) are on the front lines of combating this major issue that Newarkers face on a daily basis. This summer, UAC and RWJBarnabas Health opened their new Farm To Community Center AKA Harvest Food Hub located in the heart of downtown Newark, New Jersey on Halsey Street. Fire Power Media was honored to be there to capture the grand opening action and to talk to farmers who are supporting the much needed farm to city initiatives providing fresh produce to underserved communities. Hear how some of the farmers are reacting to the gorgeous new space where they are actively collaborating on CSA boxes, community events, and educational programs to serve the constituents of Newark. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for this incredible facility and the ways that it will support people who need the most! #growNewark #farmtocityproduce #urbanagcoop

We are excited to announce that we will now be sourcing fresh produce on a monthly basis to distribute to our families thanks to our new partnership with @njfarmersagainsthunger , a non profit that collects surplus produce from local NJ farmers & redistributes them to food pantries/local organizations fighting food insecurity in their community. This past weekend we had the wonderful opportunity to visit @montclaircommunityfarms during their monthly food distribution of fresh, locally grown produce, it was wonderful to see our good friends @powerofoneministriesinc alongside us as they fight food insecurity in neighboring cities 🥬WE GOT US🗣️ #foodjustice #solidarity #community #farmfresh #mutualaid

Mother Nature Won This Round: Fall Fest Canceled this Saturday Montclair History Center and Montclair Community Farms have made the difficult decision to cancel Fall Fest this year. We tried everything, from rain dances to pretending we didn't have a weather app, but Mother Nature had other plans, including on our rain date. For the safety of our team, vendors, and guests, we won't be hosting the event this weekend. We're still planning plenty of farm and garden fun for you next spring and summer. Thank you to our sponsors, Pierson Oil, Montclair State University, Java Love, Land Pros of NJ, and Battle Electric. We're grateful for their support, which will carry forward to our new events. Stay tuned as we plan some new community vibes. In the meantime, stay safe and dry this weekend. Montclair History Center and Montclair Community Farms
