I will be doing a longer review detailing all the ways that grief and trauma are depicted in this book at some point because I really do love how layered the commentary is. Thanks for the buddy read @moodreadermal @whsthtgirl and Caitlan! #houseofleaves #horrorbooks #ergodic #bookrecs #darkfiction

This month’s read with Beautifully Unwell Bookclub on Fable and man oh man… this was intense.

To say “Hell is a teenage girl” is the understatement of the year when it comes to these characters, especially Fernanda and Annelise. Mix in some friends who don’t have much of a backbone, parents who like to either turn a blind eye or are over-religious, and the cherry on top - a teacher at their school who has a past (and her own mental issues) JUST as bad - if not worse - then these girls.

Did you ever see the movie KIDS or even THIRTEEN? Think of those two movies , but throw in dashes of THE CRAFT and Norman Bates from Psycho.

It was uneasy to listen to , but I like feeling uncomfortable at times. Ojeda’s writing is not for the faint of heart, and puberty is a scary enough thing to experience, so writing about it with grit and venom make it that the more jarring.

It was twisted, it was intense, it was shocking and repulsive at times, but it also touched on friendships and love and familial values and how all 3 of those things shape who we are at a young age.

Maybe none of this makes sense, but my brain is still recovering from this one. Let’s yap about it because I hope I’m not the only one.

💬have you read this yet? xx Jessica

That’s a wrapppppp

Started out this month strong but big life changes came thru for the win so reading took a back seat the second half of the month.

The next month will be hectic too so audiobooks are holding strong for the current moment

💬 WHAT SHOULD I READ BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR?!

ps fun fact: i grew up listening to billy joel tapes whenever we'd go on a family trip. when he started playing at MSG, me and my family went to see him and we cried like babies. i've seen him 3 times since and feel like that's one thing checked off the bucket list. needless to say, one of my fav shirts from one of the concerts on the day we bought our house. Dad would be proud

Taco Bell TBR

There is no greater fast food than Taco Bell. Any good TB meal needs some hot sauce, and all the options come with cheeky messages on the packets. While snacking on a crunch wrap, I realized how good they would be at picking books that match their vibe.

So here is what hot sauce packets would pick if they are assembling a spooky TBR for me.

Trying this multi-caption thing for the first time ever. Not sure I like it.

QOTD: What's the best Taco Bell item?

"You so get me"

Perfect for I Live in Hell because it's an indie book and takes place in my hometown of Chicago. Even the winter night under the L tracks on the cover speak to me.

"Can't wait"

One that has been on my radar for a long time and was a recent used find. Very excited to finally give it a go

"Sure, why not?"

Uketsu's 'Strange' books all sound very intriguing and this cover really made me want to give it a try.

"Too Good to Not Be True"

A big fan of DiLouie's mockumentary style book My Ex, The Antichrist. Episode Thirteen is a found footage style episodic ghost show, so it sounds like it could believably be real.

"You're so My Type"

I love Philip Fracassi books and the hot sauce packets know it. And at one point I wanted to be a history teacher because I loved learning about the civil war, so a spooky Fracassi set during the war is 100% my type

"Taking Requests"

This was recommended to me by @frankreads94 and the cover has haunted me ever since.

"No Introduction Needed"

Then iggest name author the hot sauce packets picked, with a book that had a lot of hype last year. I've read every Hill book and have put this off for too long.

"I Double Dare You"

I said I wanted to get into more space horror. Something scary about a setting in deep space. This one is just daring me to finally make the exploration

👑All hail the unhinged FMC 🙏🏼

@virgo.who.reads tagged me in this and I HAD to jump on it. I mixed it up a bit but don’t take my word on these choices - read them yourself and then thank me later xx
