Last night, Zoe Moon brought Real Black for Me to Tāwhiri Warehouse - a deeply moving tribute to the extraordinary Roberta Flack.

Co-created with @seth.af.boy and performed with her stellar ensemble and a string quartet, Zoe reimagined Flack’s classics and hidden gems (such as "Angelitos Negros", "Feel Like Makin' Love" and "Killing Me Softly"), through lush orchestral and jazz-infused arrangements, weaving Flack’s own incredible voice into the music.

A powerful celebration of influence, identity and legacy, seen through Zoe’s singular artistic lens. As Festival Co-Director Tama Waipara said, he was “still floating from a transcendent moment and experience.”

Kia ora koutou

We're two weeks away from Black After Hours and we'd love to see you there! Right after we'll head over to support the immensely talented Zoe Moon as she performs as part of the Wellington Jazz Festival!

Zoe Moon (Mahal) returns to the Wellington Jazz Festival with Real Black for Me, a powerful tribute to the soul icon Roberta Flack— an artist whose voice could fill a room or break a heart with a whisper.

Born in Hawai‘i and raised in Aotearoa, Moon has forged a sound all her own, blending jazz, soul, blues, gospel and acoustic storytelling.

Renowned for her world-class musicianship and magnetic stage presence, she reimagines Flack’s extraordinary catalogue alongside her stellar band and a live string section. Created with Wellington composer and bandleader Seth Boy, the fresh arrangements breathe new life into beloved classics and hidden gems.

If you didn't already know Moon’s Silver Scroll-nominated single “THE LETTER” and charting release “In Person” have established her as one of Aotearoa’s most compelling emerging artists. She has performed on world-renowned stages including the North Sea Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival and the Hollywood Bowl.

We look forward to seeing you at Tāwhiri Warehouse for this unforgettable celebration of the legendary Roberta Flack and we're beyond thrilled to celebrate this incredible member of our BCA community!
