The Whittier School or “Milvia” is one of Berkeley’s oldest original schools. The original wooden school house was erected in 1892. The current Classic Moderne style building was constructed in 1939 and is a late example of ‘progressive’ American school architecture between World Wars 1 and 2. In 1984, the Whittier School was closed and the following year the Berkeley Arts Magnet Program took over the space. Berkeley Arts Magnet was an alternative school program that was created by critics of our current education system with the belief that families make schools successful and that the arts are an integral part of any enriched educational program. The school operated as such until more recently, now the school operates as a normal elementary school within BUSD. Aside from the building itself, this school yard was the stage of some legendary skateboarding in the late 90’s/early 00’s featuring multiple benches and banks scattered throughout. Unfortunately the spots are all gone now. Honor the history and enjoy my top 10 at the Whittier School!
