Exploring Polynesian waters since 10 years for epic encounters with whales, dolphins, sharks and more

Sperm whales are among the deepest diving mammals on the planet, descending well over 1,000 metres in search of squid and other deep water prey.

Their diet includes deep sea squid, including giant squid. The suckers of these squid are lined with hard, serrated rings that can leave scars around the head and mouth of sperm whales, evidence of encounters taking place far below the surface.

While humpbacks are a familiar seasonal sight around Moorea, sperm whales are a much rarer encounter, making this big male cruising past us even more special.

An incredible and completely unexpected encounter. 🐋

When was the last time you stared at something in awe and forgot about everything else in this world? Moments that bend time, making you wish they could last forever.

The trust this mum had in us, simply lying there and watching us as we shared the water with her and her calf, will be a memory etched in my mind for a very long time.

Swimming with whales isn’t as easy as getting on a boat and being dropped off next to one. It means long days on the water, out in the elements for hours, searching, watching and waiting. Some days you might not see a single whale. Other days, they seem to be everywhere.

After having little luck getting in the water with any whales, the day was coming to an end when we spotted one last opportunity, a mum and calf breaking the surface.

We slipped into the water and swam out to where we hoped they might pass. Then, out of the blue, they appeared.

Mum and calf slowly glided past us along the reef, the little one swimming to the surface every so often to take a breath before returning to her side, while mum kept a watchful eye on us.

After hours of searching and waiting, we couldn’t have asked for a better way to end the day. 🐋
