Inland Niger Delta - Most probably Gimbala

A very ancient bronze depicting a man with a stick in the left hand

It is still intact & in perfect conditions
- despite its fragile casting with a very thin thickness
- despite its several centuries of life & use

The genitals of the figure seem to represent a human face : but I don't know if this is something intentional or if it is just their stylization

Please note its deep multi-layered excavation patina

very early ogboni rods probably 19th cent. with very nice patina 47 cm bronze/yellow cast
from a legendary collection of elsa bloch- diener prominent art dealer especially for greek roman art of antiquity

Among the Yoruba, in south-west Nigeria, there is the Ogboni secret society, which can determine the social and religious life of the people (even today!); through its own jurisdiction, in healing the sick, through fortune-telling, etc. When joining this Ogboni secret society, each new member (men and women) receives a pair of such “Edan sticks”. They represent a man and a woman and are connected by eyelets on their heads with a thin iron chain. At Ogboni gatherings, these figurative metal staffs are hung around the participants' necks and are regarded as a kind of “membership card”. The “Edan rods” always consist of an iron rod that protrudes from the bottom of the figures.

the music is by the austrian composer viktor ullmann born 1898 cieszyn poland - 1944 auschwitz he was of jewish origin
initially imprisoned in theresienstadt concentration camp he wrote: "it should only be emphasized that my musical work was encouraged and not inhibited by theresienstadt, that we were by no means merely sitting lamenting by Babylon's rivers and that our cultural will was adequate to our will to live."
on october 16, 1944, ullmann was deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau together with pavel haas and hans krása and murdered by gassing shortly after his arrival.

With reference to the Akan goldweights this is definitely my favorite shape & also the one that I find most interesting among all

These are real grasshoppers casted directly from nature
- I study them from many years
- I have built a vast collection of these specific objects
- I am constantly looking for new interesting examples

Akan | Ashanti

Both the objects of this post are in copper alloy casted directly from nature

I find that the first photo of the post with two grasshoppers is not only beautiful but especially interesting since it depicts two bronzes that despite representing two insects of the same species are however completely different in size & patina

The smallest item on the top of the first image of the post
- 3,7 cm
- ex Auction House Zemanek
- ex collection Albert Gsell : item collected by him in Ghana between 1897 & 1907
- item published on the book “L’art du métal en Afrique de l’Ouest”, Pierluigi Peroni & Wilfried Glar, Éditions Toguna, Loze, France, 2020

The largest item on the bottom of the first image of the post
- 7,1 cm
- ex collection Klaus-Jochen Krueger
- ex collection Klaus-Jochen Schneider

This object is neither important nor expensive but it is a very good example of the bronze productions of West Africa
- it is an interesting & uncommon figurine
- it was casted with a lot of details
- it has a great old patina

Its ethnic group of origin is not attributable with certainty
- it could be possible to define it as Lobi area | culture because of some of its features & especially for what concerns his face
- but I also see in it some typical characteristics of the Dan groups : such as its legs
- and it depicts also other traits of other small groups of the same regions of the two above ethnicities

My belief is that this bronze could come from Ivory Coast & I would be quite sure of this statement also based on my considerations above

In any case & because of its mix of styles & to avoid uncertain hypotheses : on my files I have classified this female figurine as “West Africa - Probably Ivory Coast”
