GET Action Decision Making 🏀

This drill starts with the offensive player handling full-court pressure while walking the defender down to create the proper angle and timing for the GET action. Once the defender is engaged, the ball handler makes the pass to the coach at the slot (elbow extended), then immediately flows into a dribble handoff (DHO).

From there, it’s all about making the right read:

• Defender goes under → Step into the catch-and-shoot three.
• Defender goes over → Attack downhill into a one- or two-dribble pull-up, or snake the handoff to create separation for the mid-range jumper.

The emphasis is on handling pressure, creating an advantage before the action even begins, reading the defender’s coverage, and making game-speed scoring decisions.

Today we had a great training session with Aaron Aikoroje (Lambton College – OCAA), Christian Carinci (University of New Brunswick – U SPORTS), and Mustafa Asrar (Los Angeles Premier Prep).

Today’s emphasis was attacking off the closeout and making the correct read against live defenders.

The drill started with a pass from the top to the offensive player, who caught at the left elbow, right elbow, or the top of the key. As the pass was in the air, the primary defender closed out from the nail while a secondary help defender was positioned on the block. From there, the offensive player had to make the correct game read—attack the closeout, get to a pull-up, finish at the rim, or create an advantage based on the help defender’s positioning.

Too many players spend their workouts attacking cones. Cones don’t close out, slide, recover, or rotate. If you want your skills to translate to games, you need to train against live defenders who force real-time reads, proper footwork, and game-speed decision-making. Train for the game, not just the workout.
