Two of our #MIFF2021 feature highlights have been Alexandre Koberidze’s What Do We See When We Look at the Sky? and Ahmad Bahrami’s The Wasteland. The former took us to the summer streets of Kutaisi in Georgia, where a passing car interrupts the reception of a message from the wind in a fairy tale. Where street dogs, and the rhythm of a light-footed cat, are given room for their own stories to unfold on equal footing to their human counterparts, and, like a Yuri Norstein (Hedgehog in the Fog) echo, or message received by a down pipe, that by keeping it tight, big things can be discussed; “the simpler the story, the more space for the film”. To Iran. From a saturated colour palette to velvety black and white. In The Wasteland, we also heard the message, delivered, too, by its gentle perspective loops, which ensure that when the last line/blow is finally delivered, though expected, it winds you. In the fate of the workers, many months without pay, in every grain of sand at the brickworks factory, in every glass of the workers’ unfinished tea in the Boss’s office, in the horse’s gate left open, in the labour of breath as the credits roll. Devastating. “Building materials have changed”; “Get up and get to work”; pack your bags and leave.

Two beautiful films so far. Our MIFF at home, by the computer screen. We’ve also seen Sisters with Transistors, Ballad of a White Cow, The Macaluso Sisters, and Girls | Museum. We look forward to sharing our thoughts about the films we’ve seen, MIFF mates. Though the 24 films we’d booked for our cinema leg of MIFF have been cancelled, we look forward to streaming many more. Recommendations, friends?

“When you first start shooting, you have to be careful to not show too much or too little, to not go too near but to still catch something. In moments like this, it was great to have someone like [cinematographer Faraz Fesharaki] by my side who I knew would never disturb a sleeping cat on the street by putting his tripod there.”
