POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
These past few days, the swifts have become particularly frenzied in their aerobatics. It seems as if their activity builds towards a feverish excitement in mid-to-late July, on the cusp of their migration south. I find it impossible to believe they do not revel in their flight as they whistle and wheel at high velocity, often within inches of my windowpane. It looks like nothing short of pure joy to me.

But just occasionally, they will miscalculate, hit a window or a wall, and plummet in a tailspin to the ground. Once grounded, they may find it tricky to take off again as their wingspan is wide, and their legs are short, which can give them insufficient purchase to rise into the air.

They are designed to be almost continually in flight. Virtually everything happens whilst they are airborne - feeding, mating, sleeping - and, if they find themselves knocked from the air, they need space beneath their wings to allow them to relaunch.

A few days ago, we heard the sound of a persistent, agitated flapping outside our basement kitchen window. I craned my neck to see the dusky slate-brown bird trying wretchedly to lift off the ground, but instead thrashing its wings on the flagstones, and pummelling itself against the stone walls.

My sister carried the bird up to a relatively open area of the garden, cupping it loosely in the palm of her hand, arm outstretched, facing the direction of the wind. They can be injured, stunned or in shock after a fall, so it is important not to simply throw them into the air.

Our hearts were in our mouths, when it pitched forwards, feeling the breeze below its wings, and swept up to rejoin the other swifts. I had the glum realisation that any day now, they will all vanish until next May, and I could only look up to the sky in awe, to see their rapturous screaming and careening like a bunch of reckless adolescent joyriders.

I just love this pic of the Dufftons, my Scottish ancestors, looking fine and dandy with my Great Grandma, Jessie Ann Duffton (1877-1958), front and centre at the bottom of the group
